Friday evening saw the award ceremony for a new initiative aimed at increasing conference and tradeshow traffic to the city.

The Nelson Mandela Bay Business Event Awards (NMBBEA) were created and organised by a team of local businesswomen who are service providers to the event industry.

Caroline Morgan, Melissa Palmer and Tricia Wood hope that the publicity and social media buzz surrounding the awards will alert South African and international event organisers to the depth of services available in our Metro.

Palmer said “We often hear of out-of-town organisers bringing AV equipment, caterers and even greeters with them. That is expensive and unnecessary, but they simply aren’t aware that we have it all here.”

The awards started in August with a nomination phase, then submission of portfolios and an audited judging process by local industry experts.

  • Long Service – Michelle Brown
  • Most Promising Newcomer – Stefan Ferreira
  • Event Services – Scan Display
  • Decor and Catering – Fat Cats Catering
  • Event Organiser (large events) – Harwood Promotions
  • Event Organiser (small events) – PR Junction
  • Entertainment, Speaker, MC – Niqui Cloete-Barrass

The event also saw the presentation of a Lifetime Achievement Award to Mr Peter Myles for his decades of passionate service to the local tourism industry. The presentation by Shaun van Eck ended in a standing ovation for Mr Myles.

Mpho Pebane, representing the evening’s major sponsor Nelson Mandela Bay Tourism, spoke of the importance of initiatives such as this for growing the local economy, and pledged support for seeing it flourish in future years.
