As the Ngqura Container Terminal approaches it’s 6th birthday on 4th October 2015. Its birthday present came early when the terminal handled 75 000 Twenty Foot Equivalent Units (TEU) for the month of August 2015. This is the highest volumes handled in the second quarter of 2015/16 fiscal year. It is an impressive volume performance as the economic sluggish growth impacts both imports and exports. The volume split creates confidence in the transshipment strategy, which has seen the majority of the volumes being transshipped for the month. The terminal recorded 26% imports, 27% exports and 47% transshipments of the 75 000 TEUs. The customer satisfaction index (CSI) clocked at 88% which is a testimony that as Transnet Port Terminals handled the volumes customers were also satisfied with the operational performance.
The operational performance also fed well to the high volume traffic. The measure of meeting and exceeding the operational targets were noted in Gross Crane per hour (GCH) which clocked at 31 GCH against a target of 30 GCH, Ship Working Hour (SWH) recorded at 62 SWH against a target of 60 SWH. The concerted effort from all the stakeholders who are responsible for vessel quick turnaround time has seen the results of joint planning and driving the same objectives. The customer satisfaction has also been displayed in the achievement of 94% against a target of 80% in the container terminal operations contract (CTOC).
The high traffic has been attributed to the increased market demand, which has seen more growth in transshipment volumes and the capacity of NCT to handle more volumes. The injection of R1,1billion investment last year has increased the capacity and resources from 800 000 TEUs to 1,5 million TEUs. The terminal has created 870 permanent jobs to ensure that the customer expectations are being met consistently. The committed and highly skilled employees are consistently improving and seeking ways to improve productivity that in return attracts more volumes.
“We are delighted that the terminal was able to handle the kind of volume and turned the vessels around quicker. The commitment from the employees has been encouraging, we are geared to handle more volumes” says Noxolo Thabatha, Acting Terminal Manager.
“We are humbled by the support that our customers and stakeholders are affording TPT. This is testimony that TPT and its customers share the same vision of growing the volumes whenever an opportunity presents itself. We are also encouraged by the increase in the transshipment volumes which is testimony to the fact that Ngqura Container Terminal is positioned to service the east and west markets.” Says Siya Mhlaluka, General Manager, Eastern Cape Terminals
The terminal prides itself for the service offering that is pinned on state of the art equipment as well as modern technology. The highly skilled workforce ensures that customer’s expectations are met and exceeded.
