Veganism is a growing movement worldwide and it seems to be gaining traction in Gqeberha as well with many restaurants offering Vegan options – okay some people still don’t get that Vegans do not eat ANY animal Products – so that well intentioned cheese smothered sandwich or pizza is a No No!

1 November is World vegan Day so we pulled out the following Gqeberha based restaurants that have an exclusively (or as near as dammit!) vegan menu on offer for patrons. Visit one or more of them on 1 November and explore the tasty delights that veganism offers.

The Kindred Kitchen – out of 205 Google Reviews the Kindred Kitchen has a 4.8/5 rating. Local Guide, Colleen Robinson wrote; “Fantastic service, fabulously tasty food. The Kindred Kitchen was the very first plant based restaurant in Gqeberha (formerly Port Elizabeth). It is situated in the bustling and creative Richmond Hill among many other amazing restaurants, bars and boutiques.

The food menu is fully vegan with the exception of honey in some drinks and desserts cows milk is offered as an option for coffees.

They offer a variety of meal options from super healthy raw smoothies and smoothie bowls packed full of superfoods to cooked breakfasts, deep fried chips and a burger for lunch. There really is something for everyone.

Aruna Foods – out of 20 Google reviews Aruna Foods scored 4.6/5. Local Guide, Nonkululeko Noni Mapasa wrote; “I have to take a moment to appreciate this beautiful spot in Gqeberha. Friendly staff and friendly owner. Bought their vegan cupcakes and they were amazing! And I’m not even vegan, haha. I must also point out I love the new name Aruna, it has a nice fitting. Aruna has to be one of my favorite spots now, can’t wait to come back, to read and to somewhat escape. Congratulations and well done!”

Aruna Foods is a plant-based vegan food business that was started with a strong focus on the love of vegetables and an appreciation for depth of flavour and healthy eating. Or quite simply, feeding your soul. Aruna’s mission is to inspire healthier eating by connecting people to real food.

“I love cooking and preparing beautiful plates of food, and the energy I receive when someone has eaten a bowlful of love that I have prepared or taught them to prepare is indescribable,” says Aruna Foods founder, Christine Simpson.

Boabab Wholefood Cafe – out of 35 Google Reviews the Baobab Wholefood Cafe scored 4.9/5. Local Guide, Rakesh Gosai wrote; “A perfect little vegan Cafe inside the Werk building. We had brunch here. Meal portions are perfect and so full of flavour! Definitely a place worth visiting for a wholesome meal and smoothie! 5 stars all the way!”

At the end of 2015 the owners bought a food trailer and started their first business – Chia Health Food Co. This was a time in their lives when they were starting to understand that there was more to food than taste and sustenance, that it had a nutritional value which could deeply affect our level of health and well-being. Over the next year and a half they spent most weekends trading at various markets and sporting events, promoting a healthier way of eating through the superfood smoothies, fresh fruit and vegetable juices, kombucha and other fermented products, and plant-based food.

Demands from customers included where they could find Baobab during the week, which led the owners to start looking for a spot to permanently set up the trailer. About 8 months after their first market they were approached by the owners of WERK, which was the venue of a popular food truck market they had been trading at. WERK were renovating a warehouse and were looking for a tenant to sell food from one of the spaces. The idea was appealing as working from a trailer had it’s limitations and the the fact that they could co-create how the space would look was exciting.

They took the plunge and Baobab Juice and Smoothie Bar opened in January 2018. As with everything in life, change is a constant, and over the last few years the space has changed and expanded and so has the name, as they realised they were more than a juice and smoothie bar, and so Baobab Wholefood Cafe was born.

The owners say; “We want to see a world where humans understand the power they possess over their own health and well-being, and how magical life can be when health and vitality are chosen as top priority. Our mission is to provide an example of how easy and delicious it is to eat from a health-focused perspective. We want everyone to understand how important it is to fuel their bodies with proper nutrition, and that their food choices today will make a difference to their long-term level of health.”

Blend Cafeteena – out of 3 Google Reviews Blend Cafeteena scored 5/5. Local Guide, Quitschys Pizza Restaurant Di Stefano e Lucia wrote; “ngredients makes her dishes special. You dont need to be an vegetarian to enjoy her food. And when you are Vegetarian or vegan I’m sure you will come always back to try more different recipes. Ah nothing to do with food, but when you’re a smoker after eating you can enjoy a nice cigarette and a hot coffee, she sells also everything for the smokers needs.”

EDITOR: The Blend Facebook Page seems to be a bit UNbusy and we phoned to see if Blend Cafeteena was still in business. At the time of writing we had not received confirmation.
