FNB Varsity Shield Head to Head: Mabodla vs Snyders

FNB Rhodes and FNB CPUT will look to their flyhalves to ignite the respective attacks in Makhanda on Friday night.

FNB Rhodes will have their work cut out for them against the reigning FNB Varsity Shield champions. They will have to live with FNB CPUT in the forwards if they are to have any chance of claiming an upset victory.

The Stallions have focused on their conditioning in the pre-season. Coach Andy Royle hopes that they will be more competitive, especially in the second half of matches. Their goal this season is to avoid relegation.

Meanwhile, FNB CPUT coach Alastair Theys has spoken about the team’s determination to defend its title. The Western Cape outfit has lost a lot of players since 2021, though, and it remains to be seen if they will be as potent and dominant in 2022.

The good news is that they still boast Feghorn-Leigh Snyders at No 10. Theys often compares Snyders to All Blacks flyhalf Dan Carter, due to his passing and running strengths. Those will come to the fore on Friday if the FNB CPUT forwards provide their flyhalf with a decent platform.

Opposite number Siyosile Mabodla may be in for a challenging evening. The diminutive 19-year-old has to make a statement on attack and defence if his side is to have any chance against the more fancied visitors from Cape Town.

The FNB Varsity Cup was launched in 2008 with the tournament taking place over just six weeks, including a bumper weekend of matches in George. Koshuis Rugby also started in 2008.
