The opening game between MI Cape Town and Paarl Royals in Newlands on 10 January at 17h30 was sold out a week before the start of the game.

TEAMS:

Sunrisers Eastern Cape:

The St George’s Park, Gqeberha based team is owned by Sun TV Network Limited, owners of Sunrisers Hyderabad.

Gqeberha is awash with optimism ahead of the arrival of the Sunrisers Eastern Cape to fly their flag in the #SA20. There is no other atmosphere to rival the St George’s Park stronghold, with the local brass band a unique element, and they will be hoping to be dancing the stands while watching headline star Tristan Stubbs at his bludgeoning best on his home ground.

Born-and-bred in Eastern Cape, Stubbs earned his reputation in these parts and will look to validate his record purchase price at the SA20 auction with some powerful displays for the Sunrisers.

The SREC have certainly invested in young South African talent with the addition of Proteas seamer Marco Jansen and Ottniel Baartman. The highly-skilled Baartman has certainly developed a great reputation as a “death-bowling specialist” who can close out the innings with composure.

They will be captained by the Proteas’ highest-ranked T20 batter Aiden Markram, who remains the only South African skipper to lift a major tournament trophy aloft when he led the SA U19 side to glory in Dubai in 2014. The team is owned by Sun TV Network Limited, owners of Sunrisers Hyderabad.

With Gqeberha known as “The Friendly City” visitors to sea-side town will enjoy a fabulous experience, but don’t expect the Sunrisers Eastern Cape to be equally hospitable on the field as they chase glory in the SA20.

Sunrisers Eastern Cape Team:

  • Adam Rossington – Wicketkeeper
  • Adrian Birrell – Coach
  • Aiden Markram – All-Rounder
  • Aya Gqamane – All-Rounder
  • Baakier Abrahams – Assistant Coach

Paarl Royals Team:

The Boland Park, Paarl based team is owned by the Royals Sports Group, owners of Rajasthan Royals.

Paarl may be known for its fine vintages and vistas, but they will now also be known for their blockbuster cricket side, aptly named the Paarl Royals. Owned by the Royal Sports Group, this regal outfit has made no secret of the strategy to be employed over the course of the first season of the #SA20 competition.

They went hard from the outset at the auction with the purchase of Proteas stars Tabraiz Shamsi and Lungi Ngidi and they will no doubt look to play their cricket in a similar manner.

England white-ball captain Jos Buttler will be the headline act, by Royals appointment, and will be joined by his 2019 World Cup-winning teammates Jason Roy and Eoin Morgan.

They will not be alone in their endeavours, however. David Miller, the South African middle-order thriller, was secured ahead of the auction and is arguably the most in-form middle-order hitter at the moment.

The Royals’ homeground, Boland Park, attracts fervent support and the locals will be eager to see hometown hero Ferisco “The Ice Man” Adams in the same attack as Nigid, West Indian Obed McCoy and Corbin Bosch.

The Rajasthan Royals won the inaugural IPL title. Back the Paarl Royals to achieve a similar feat in the SA20.

Paarl Royals Team:

  • Andile Phehlukwayo – All-Rounder
  • Bjorn Fortuin – Bowler
  • Codi Yusuf – Bowler
  • Corbin Bosch – All-Rounder
  • Dane Vilas – Wicketkeeper/Batter
  • David Miller – Batter & Captain
  • Eoin Morgan – Batter
  • Evan Jones – All-Rounder

Durban Super Giants:

The Kingsmead based team is owned by RPSG Sports Private Limited, owners of Lucknow Super Giants.

White-sand beaches, sun, and cricket. Is there a better place to be than Durban this summer where the Super Giants have made their home? The RSPG Sports Private Limited group, owners of Indian Premier League franchise Lucknow Super Giants too, are set to rock the east coast of South Africa with their latest venture.

They have lured legendary Proteas all-rounder and Kingsmead’s favourite son Lance “Zulu ” Klusener to return to his old stomping grounds as head coach of the Super Giants team. And in true Klusener mould, he’s put together an array of attacking talent with an all-star squad.

Right at the top is Proteas opener and wicket-keeper Quinton de Kock who will be joined by West Indian Johnson Charles. The Super Giants are certainly looking to entertain due to their large Caribbean contingent that also includes Kyle Mayers, Jason Holder and Keemo Paul.

Klusener’s hand is certainly visible throughout the rest of the squad too with the Super Giants’ most expensive purchases at the SA20 auction being big-hitting Heinrich Klaasen and all-rounder Dwaine Pretorius.

Local star Prenelan Subrayen was also pre-bought with his local knowledge and nous being vital.

The Kingsmead faithful love their cricket in Durban, and they adore their cricketing stars even more! It is a recipe that is certain to tingle the exotic taste buds of anyone who follows the fortunes of the Durban franchise.

Joburg Super Kings:

The Wanderers Stadium, Johannesburg based team are owned by Chennai Super Kings Cricket Limited, owners of the Chennai Super Kings.

The hugely-successful Indian Premier League franchise Chennai Super Kings has been built on loyalty and trust. It is the cornerstone of their business.

The same model has been adopted with the Joburg Super Kings. Long-standing CSK coach Stephen Fleming has been entrusted with coaching the new franchise based in Gauteng.

And he will have the support of former CSK legend and Proteas captain Faf du Plessis. It is a coach-and-captain relationship made in heaven that will be hoping to replicate the Chennai recipe for success in the city of gold.

The Wanderers, also known as the “Bullring”, has a reputation as one of the fastest pitches in the world. This works perfectly in favour of Du Plessis’, whose love for tall strapping fast bowlers is world renowned.

The Super Kings squad certainly reflects this with South African youngsters Gerald Coetzee and Nandre Burger, West Indian Alzarri Joseph and England’s George Garton set to bring the heat.

And if the opposition do survive the initial pace onslaught, De Plessis will unleash his mystery Sri Lankan spinner Maheesh Theekshana to create even more havoc.

The Joburg faithful can also be confident that they will be seeing the ball fly high into the Highveld sky once the Super Kings come out to bat through Du Plessis, Reeza Hendicks, Janneman Malan, England’s Harry Brooke and local sensation Donavon Ferreira.

The inaugural #SA20 final is set for the Bullring on February 11. JSK will be doing all they can to ensure that’s going to be night to remember for the Joburg patrons.

Things happen quickly in Pretoria, in keeping with the rhythm of most capital cities in the world. The Pretoria Capitals are looking to bring the same level of energy to their maiden voyage into the #SA20. Fast, festive and winning cricket will be the order of the day from the franchise that is linked to the Delhi Capitals from the Indian Premier League.

There are few faster in the world than Proteas and Delhi Capitals tearaway Anrich Nortje. He is joined by Migael Pretorius, a local all-round talent with a massive future, who already has T20 experience in competitions of this nature, having turned out for the Jamaica Tallawahs.

The Pretoria Capitals have also brought Rilee Rossouw to Centurion and few score at a strike-rate faster than the powerful left-hander’s 156.02.

Graham Ford is a wily coach that has been in charge of numerous international teams and his experience, along with Proteas legend Jacques Kallis’, could be a vital for the Capitals in their maiden SA20 campaign.
