‘New’ NMB Council and Mayoral Committee Nominations [video]

Following yesterday’s dramatic scenes in the Nelson Mandela Bay Council the citizens of this metro have woken up to the fact that they now have a new Speaker, Mayor, Deputy Mayor and Mayoral Committee.

In a master stroke of political manouvering the new UDM, EFF, AIC and ANC coalition ousted the sitting incumbents from the former coalition – DA, Patriotic Alliance, African Christian Democratic Party and Cope – see: Goodbye @AtholT, Hello @MongameliB – Time to Chuck all the Politicians Out.

At this stage the way forward is not 110% clear as we await the response from the DA and partners who will study the procedures and more than likely embroil council in legal action.

As a fairly regular visitor to council (or the kindergarten as I am wont to refer to it) the most remarkable observation about the video is that the ‘voting’ and ‘items’ proceed smoothly almost as if rehearsed with no dissension.

In his ‘acceptance’ speech Mongameli Bobani said; “The time has come now to deliver basic services to the citizens of this metro”.

“This is going to be a collective government, there is not going to be a mayor that is going to talk anything that is coming out of his mouth. The Mayor is going to consult all the stakeholders. The voters didn’t want any party to win with an outright majority and we respect that. The Executive Mayor must be able to carry a collective agreement and be a spokepserson of those voters. I can assure the voters of the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro that the honeymoon starts now. We will also concentrate on the catalytic projects because we want to ensure that our people are getting employment. We want to empower our small businesses and we want our small contractors to be big contractors. The previously disadvantaged people it is their time now, this is their government,” said Bobani before going on to announce his new Mayoral Committee
