Cricket Eastern Cape (Pty) Ltd has named the Chevrolet Warriors squad for the forthcoming season. Thando Booi (Interim CEO) said; “We were happy with the squad that was presented to the Board by the Selection Committee and are pleased to see that of the five new contracts three players are youngsters that have come through the ranks of playing provincial cricket and are now being validated by receiving professional contracts.”
Newcomer Sisanda Malaga had a terrific year for the EP Provincial team last season and was the leading wicket taker in the provincial competition. He took seven 5 wicket hauls with a total of 67 first class wickets. 21 year old Thandolwethu Mnyaka, who has played 27 matches for Border, is a right arm medium fast bowler who made his Border debut in 2013.
Colin Ingram who is no longer contracted to CSA will stay with the Chevrolet Warriors and will captain the team this season. His commitment to the Warriors and vast experience will play a big role in the way forward for the team.
Although not a newcomer to the squad Lundi Mbane has received a contract and will be wanting to make his mark in all formats of the game. SA U19 player David White has been re-contracted to the franchise. The Directors of Cricket Eastern Cape (Pty) Ltd. announced earlier today that they felt that it was “time for change” at the Warriors franchise and had decided to appoint Colin Ingram as Captain of the Chevrolet Warriors for the ensuing season.
Ingram with his international experience had captained the team on a couple of occasions in the absence of Davy Jacobs and has shown that he possesses all the attributes to lead the team into a new era. Ingram has remained true to his roots and stayed with the Warriors after his national contract was not renewed last season. Chairman of the Board John Ross-Smith said that they had believed that the hard working Ingram would naturally lead by example and assist the young Warriors team to once again bring back silverware to the Eastern Cape.
The Board also thanked Davy Jacobs for his massive contribution as captain over the past six years, and who still had a vital role to play within the team on and off the field of play. After appointing Jacobs as captain in 2008, it took him just two seasons to repay the faith when he guided his team to triumph in the Standard Bank Pro20 and the MTN40 in the summer of 2010-11, the first trophies ever won by the Eastern Cape franchise.
