At today’s Nelson Mandela Bay Metropolitan Municipality council meeting the opposition parties of the DA, UDM and COPE staged a walkout – but, two DA members stayed behind, giving council a quorum which allowed them to continue with the business of the day and approve all items on white and (we presume) green paper.
Here UDM Councillor Mongameli Bobani explains why, in his opinion, the speaker was out of order.
The opposition parties should have read the signs earlier in the morning as the Executive Mayor Danny Jordaan was on fire in his response to the opposition parties – saying that each of them were; “A lot of sound and no substance”. The DA’s Retief Odendaal was twice in the firing line with the Executive Mayor singling him out and saying that Odendaal had; “An inability to listen!”
In my humble experience when someone comes out fighting like that then he has (or is pretty confident that he has) something up his sleeve.
Of course the real business of running the city is now being forgotten by the kindergarten in the run up to the Local Governemnt elections which promise to be brutal.
Councillors must all be experiencing real terror as they drive off in their air conditioned luxury cars with expensive leather cosseting their ample behinds. Just what will they do if they lose at the polls this year?
Earlier in the proceedings Bobani demanded that an ANC Councillor apologise for referring to him [Bobani] as ‘Malema’.
