Mind My Broadway

9 May 2023 By Alan Straton

It’s time to get back to some good old Broadway! Audiences in Nelson Mandela Bay have already enjoyed a feast of great shows from G&S at the Savoy in 2023. This years’ Valentine’s Cabaret was hailed as the best ever and the January Holiday Theatre Project was a huge hit with both 35 young performers and an excited public. There’s much more to come starting with a return of the always popular Broadway Revue after 4 years – Mind My Broadway.

Leandi Fontini, co-Director of Music! Movies! Magic! and standout performer in “Love is in the Air” is an exciting new addition to the G&S creative pool. Leandi’s visionary concept for this all singing, all dancing spectacular, Mind My Broadway, comes alive as she tells the story of Lola, the “too fabulous to be past it” Broadway diva. “This show is a celebration of a stage performer’s career. The good, the bad and the ugly that comes with it and how, no matter how cruel the industry can be, your spirit and love for theatre never dies.” Says Fontini . “It’s a story of courage, resilience and the power of following your dreams”.

Mind my Broadway introduces another great addition to the G&S team with Robert Gillmer making his debut as Vocal Director to work his magic on some very exciting and challenging songs. Carl-Lee Moodley from Feet on Fire, first seen in last year’s Valentine show, Choreographs the 30 strong cast and continues to excite. This power team support Fontini to create a breathtaking production that will have audiences enjoying every moment.

Our diva, Lola, with the help of her vivid storytelling, brings to life some musical theatre favourites as well as fabulous lesser known Broadway hits. Lola’s journey takes us from Cabaret to Cats, Fiddler to My Fair Lady, Hamilton to Hairspray, Mamma Mia! To Moulin Rouge all with a dash Into the Woods and a trip to New York, New York. The cast ranges from 16 to less than 60 and audiences will recognise some popular faces in Melissa Leander, Phil Cowie, Georgia-Jo Palmer and Ashleigh Maling-Nel with Rose Cowpar as Lola. Auditions held in April revealed some amazing talent and there are many performers making their stage or G&S debut. There’s no doubt that theatre is back with a passion.

Mind my Broadway runs from Friday 19th to the 27th of May 2023 at the iconic Savoy Theatre in Adcockvale. There will be a welcome return of the popular cabaret style seating at tables and patrons are welcome to bring along a picnic to enjoy during the show. A cash bar and coffee bar will be available as well as card facilities. Tickets are R130 for performances at 19:30 nightly from Wednesday to Saturday and for the matinee at 15:00 on Sunday 21 May or book a table of 8 or more and pay just R1000. Tickets are only R90 for the special family matinee on Saturday 20th and Tuesday evening at 19:30. Bookings are on Webtickets and at any Pick ‘n Pay store.

I have cherished the idea of a democratic and free society. If need be, it is an ideal for which I am prepared to die." See more articles by Alan.
