In a bid to bolster investment in Nelson Mandela Bay the need for a transversal investment facilitation forum was raised by Executive Mayor Cllr Retief Odendaal, to create a platform to unblock investment-related opportunities within NMBM and promote economic development, increase employment, and reduce poverty. This forum would also serve as platform/structure for the private and public sector to highlight opportunities and stumbling blocks in relation to high-impact investment projects / developments in Nelson Mandela Bay.
Following the initial proposal, a Mayoral Investment Facilitation Panel (MIFP) was established which includes the Executive Mayor, MMC for Economic Development, Tourism and Agriculture, the City Manager and a number of Executive Directors and Senior Directors from relevant departments
“Investor’s decisions are largely dependent upon the way government policies and actions shape the investment climate within a prospective investment location. For a host of reasons over the last couple of years NMBM was not geared to timeously respond to investment opportunities and their related applications within the bureaucratic system,” said Executive Mayor Cllr Retief Odendaal.
Odendaal said: “There are application backlogs, delays, and poor coordination between directorates, and between NMBM and other spheres of government, this panel aims to unblock these. The inaugural sitting of the Mayoral Investment Facilitation Panel this week considered 4 applications with a combined value of over R1 billion.”
“We welcome this high-level intervention, as the custodians of Economic Development in the Metro. The Council-approved Investment Incentive Policy provides the framework for the City to encourage new investment as well as to retain and expand existing investments. Through the One-Stop Shop we facilitate investment in the City through a single interface” said MMC for Economic Development, Tourism and Agriculture Cllr Luxolo Namette.
Namette said: “This panel will empower us to bring investors and the Metro around a table to discuss and resolve any blockages”
