MBDA engages New Brighton residents via integrated public platforms

4 August 2020 By Alan Straton

The Mandela Bay Development Agency calls on all residents of New Brighton to use integrated public channels to engage simultaneously across platforms on possible opportunities and development programmes for the historic township. Community members can be part of the conversation on KQ FM this coming Thursday, the 6th of August with Percy Lamani joined by the MBDA, four Councillors from ward 14, 15, 16 and 17 and other sector stakeholders. All valued public participation will be seamlessly on radio, virtually on social media as well as on location.

Since its inception, all MBDA projects have followed an in-depth public participation process, that include collaborating with key stakeholders through mass gatherings to meet project design and implementation goals.

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the Agency has resorted to innovative use of integrated media consumption by means of a live radio broadcast with interactive social media (facebook and WhatsApp messages and voice notes), including loud hailing with traditional advertising. This innovative new public engagement approaches to afford the public an opportunity to contribute to a new future.

MBDA Spokesperson, Luvuyo Bangazi said, “Residents are advised to follow discussions and engage directly in the conversation via the MBDA Facebook Live feed, where you can pose questions to the Ward Councillors or send in your suggestions via comments section. Listeners can also send WhatsApp messages or voice notes to KQFM live on 062 358 8001.”
The MBDA has done extensive projects in New Brighton, catalytic programmes, projects, and events include the Zondi Street soccer field and clubhouse, Qaqawuli Community Hall, the award-winning Singaphi Street upgrade, T.C Magqabi Swimming Pool, S.S Mendi educational commemoration, and the uplifting New Brighton Jazz Festival.

Bangazi said, “We value public input and insight, hence In an effort to solidify the economic development of New Brighton, the mecca of heritage, arts, culture, sport and busting with tourism potential to benefit all of Nelson Mandela Bay, the MBDA aims to design the future collaboratively with New Brighton residents to provide social, spatial, and economic transformation.

“Local Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) have been integral in the delivery of MBDA projects. Such economic development opportunities are crucial in building sustainable community driven initiatives that are linked to the development of a tourism route that highlights cultural and historic heritage”, added Bangazi.

The re-imagined development precinct aims to build Infrastructure to reinforce and support psycho-social projects that focus on youth skills advancement and supportive educational initiatives, and sports development.

New Brighton was established in 1902 as the first officially black residential area in Port Elizabeth. “If New Brighton Development is of interest to you, then don’t miss this opportunity, join the conversation on Thursday from 6pm, on KQ FM and via MBDA Facebook Live. Get your voice heard, re imagine New Brighton and build a better future for the next generation”, concluded Bangazi.
