Dear Editor
The DA and its coalition partners in Nelson Mandela Bay, under the leadership of Mayor Retief Odendaal, have shown what is possible when petty politics are put aside, and the focus is entirely on serving the people.
Since the coalition has taken over the reins of government, there has been a renewed energy and focus, improved service delivery, a crackdown on corruption and an air of optimism and hope amongst residents.
Yesterday a major crackdown led to the suspension of seven senior officials implicated in what potentially is one of the biggest corruption scandals in the Metro’s history.
The internal investigation, which has been handed over to the Hawks and the SIU, pertains to allegations of fraud and corruption that emanated from the recent explosion of an electricity substation at the Coega IDZ.
The DA congratulates Mayor Odendaal and the coalition on their efforts to deal corruption a decisive blow.
It is because of these interventions that the ANC/EFF coalition of doom is doing everything in its power to take over government and gain control of the city’s coffers.
Mayor Odendaal is a servant leader and, from day one, he has rolled up his sleeves and got to work to improve the lives of residents. He has not been a part-time, office-bound mayor.
The successes of the coalition government after only seven months in government speak for themselves.
These include:
- More than 14 000 water leaks repaired.
- More than 20 000 potholes repaired.
- 1700 title deeds handed over.
- More than 15 000 streetlights repaired.
- Amended the ATTP policy to make free basic services more accessible to residents in need.
- Stopped over-extraction of the dams to prevent Day Zero.
The DA will not allow the corrupt ANC/EFF coalition to bring this city to its knees. We will fight for the people of Nelson Mandela Bay. We will fight to ensure that the work we have started continues and that residents get the services they are entitled to.
Regards
Andrew Whitfield MP
DA EC Provincial Leader
