Matt Sexton to Join EP Rugby as Head Coach

By

Director of EP Rugby, Alan Solomons confirmed this morning that Tasman rugby Academy Manager, Matt Sexton will take up the position of Head Coach on 15 July 2012. Matt will be Head Coach for the Super Rugby (Southern Kings) and Currie Cup (EP Kings) sides in a contract that expires at the end of 2014.

Citing a long relationship with Sexton, Solomons said; “Matt is head and shoulders the right guy for Eastern Province rugby. He is a good man and has the capability to land up coaching New Zealand.” Going further, Alan Solomons said; “I personally vouch for Matt Sexton as he possesses the exact character traits that we are looking for in EP Rugby – Integrity, Altruism and Professionalism”.

Solomons coached Sexton for three years as Ulster (2001 to 2004) where he shone as a Hooker and has come in for rare praise from Sean Fitzpatrick who cited Matt Sexton as the best set piece hooker. Sexton played for; the Junior All Blacks, over 100 games for Canterbury Rugby, the Canterbury Crusaders from 1996 to 2001 and the Barbarians in 2003 and 2004.

Sexton (40) is married with 3 children and a qualified Physical Education Teacher holding a Bachelor of Education degree, a Diploma in Secondary Teaching, and a Post Graduate Diploma in Commerce (with Distinction) and a Post Graduate Diploma in Sport Management and Coaching.

Sexton will be relieving Robbie Kempson of his dual coaching role, allowing Robbie to concentrate on the EP Academy.

Cheeky Watson looked well pleased with the latest announcement saying; “These guys come with a tremendous pedigree” and “…..the Crusaders Franchise matches our Ethos”.

On the same plane with Sexton will be another addition to the coaching staff, the present head coach of the Canterbury U19’s, Brad Mooar, will take up the position of Specialist Skills Coach.
