Mandela, Mhlaba and Mbeki visiting City Hall today

The Mandela Bay Development Agency (MBDA), working on behalf of the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality (NMBM) and funded by the National Lotteries Distribution Trust Fund, entered into a partnership with the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, to assist with the implementation of Route 67.

As part of Route 67, various sculptures were produced, led by a group of 3rd and 4th year students at the NMMU School of Music Art and Design. A total of fourteen  figures of activists, were produced. The National Department of Arts and Culture provided the resources to the MBDA, for the figures of Nelson Mandela, Raymond Mhlaba and Govan Mbeki to be cast in bronze.

The bronze castings will be on display in the foyer of Port Elizabeth’s City Hall, for the next week. After that the MBDA will install these sculptures as a piece of public art in one of its development and city renewal projects in consultation  with the NMBM.

Public and visitors are welcome to visit City Hall during working hours. The MBDA has teamed up with various institutions, celebrities and community leaders to encourage the public in honouring international Mandela Day, by spending 67 Minutes on route 67.  “Route 67 is an experience one should do in their lifetime, the heritage route celebrates Nelson Mandela’s 67 years of struggle against apartheid”, says MBDA Spokesperson, Luvuyo Bangazi.
