Making a Difference one book at a time

Making a real difference is the heart and soul of Varsity College Port Elizabeth’s community engagement initiatives. And it is because of this heart and soul that the campus raised R70 000 to purchase a mobile library unit for Adolph Schauder Primary School. The mobile library which contains 500 books, 40 Inch LED TV, DVD Player and 25 DVD’s was handed over to the school on Friday, November 13th.

The Masixhasane Literacy Project is Varsity College’s 2015 National Corporate Social Initiative (CSI). Masixhasane aims to with its Mobile Library Units generate a passion for reading among the disadvantaged schools and communities of South Africa.

Adolph Schauder Primary School was started as a preparatory school in 1961 with Sub A, Sub B and Standard 1 classes. To date the school has 526 learners at the school ranging from grade 0 to grade 7. Says Jo-Ann Craig, Educator at Adolph Schauder Primary School “…with the amazing efforts of Varsity College, we will be able to offer our learners the opportunity to escape into a world of stories that educate them and provide them with a “happy place” to go within these books. They will experience hope, adventure and develop a love for reading which is priceless. The school is in desperate need of all kinds of reading material for our learners and now we are one step closer to our goal of a functioning library facility. With more books to read, the learners will be more prepared and have an increased ability to read when they get into the next grade”.

“Literacy support amongst the youth is something that Varsity College places the utmost importance on; there is thus no more fitting way to give back to the community than donating a mobile library unit which will hopefully spark a love for learning and acquiring knowledge at a young age. We have been privileged to partner with the Masixhasane Literacy Project for a second year running and yet again put smiles on so many children’s faces; we strongly believe that through education communities can be uplifted one child at a time. This has been a fulfilling adventure which needed the support and committment of many people in order to be a success”. Says Catherine Louw, Vice Principal of Student Support.

Kaziah Doubel, 3rd year Public Relations student says, “It was great to be part of such a wonderful project to help make a difference in the lives of the learners and helping them expand thier knowledge by reading”.
