Main to swim Mauritian Shark Pit

Port Elizabeth adventure swimmer Kyle Main has identified Mauritius for his next endurance expedition.

Main, who has earned a reputation for doing extreme first time ultra swims exceeding 20kms, spanned the Rottnest Channel off Australia in an African record time in June last year and swam the Straits of Gibraltar the year before that.

Donning only a speedo, Main, a swimming coach and former SA swimming champion, will swim from Flat Island, the northern most part of Mauritius to Grand Baie, a distance of around 20km between Feb 11 and 22.

Flat island at the extreme north of Mauritius, includes an internationally famous dive site called The Shark Pit swirling with sharks as a result of the rich oxygen available due to crushing waves against the cliffs.

This will be a first time swim, “so there remains a lot of unknown,” Main says but I expect to to be in the water for around 4 hours.”
