I have seen this magnificent image of Nelson Mandela up close and it truly is iconic.
Created by Port Elizabeth artist, Don Bell, it is a gigantic 1900 x 1300 centimetres in size and depicts Madiba with his famous paisley shirt.
Background elements depict the early Khoi San & Xhosa heritage of the indigenous people of the Eastern Cape, Nelson’s birthplace.
In addition there are the mountain ranges, indigenous Aloe plant, rock paintings, young warrior initiation and the cultural rural villages along with traditional elders and the East Cape coastline – all are ghosted in Mandela’s past through the mud plaster technique of the background. the image is framed with a purpose designed frame in indigenous hardwood, metal and copper.
