On Tuesday the 22nd of August 2017 the bend on the 450mm steel outlet of Lovemore Heights Reservoir failed.
Wednesday the 23rd of August 2017: Our municipal plumbing staff tried to shut the valves on the outlet at Lovemore Heights Reservoir but found the valve to broken.
Divers were called in to get the outlet shut and welders began to start welding on the steel bend. The welding continued to about 23:00pm Wednesday evening.
Once done the divers went back in the reservoir to remove the steel plate and restore the water. However the steel pipe is in such a bad condition it blew open new holes that were not present when the welders started welding. The divers then went back down again and put the steel plate back to stop the flow of water. All staff left site at 01:00am.
Thursday the 24th August: Staff returned to site at 07:00am. With the water still shut they began to remove the 450mm broken outlet valve and replace it with a new valve. This was completed at 19:00pm. The pumps were open and running by 20:00pm. All staff left site.
The existing 450mm steel gooseneck after the new valve is rusted and in a very bad condition with many holes in it. It is leaking a lot of water at present. The contractor has been advised to manufacture a new 450mm gooseneck, 6mm thick, mortar lined inside and coated outside. It will take about 2 weeks to manufacture. The plan is to schedule another shutdown at the reservoir once this fitting is ready for installation.
