Local Jazz band partners with educational NGO on musical project

23 July 2012 By Port Elizabethan

VuDu, one of Port Elizabeth’s upcoming jazz bands has taken some time out to give back to their community by partnering with local NGO, Masifunde Learner Development in a musical project they have named Siyacula, Siyafunda, Siyakhula. The project incorporates music education as well as fundraising for the building of the organisations Lavel’ilanga Education Center in Walmer Township. The project will run in four week cycles, incorporating music workshops for selected members of Masifunde’s choir and drama group. The first cycle will run from 1-31 August 2012 launched by a charity concert on 28 July at Coco de Mer. The event will include a performance by the VuDu Jazz band and supporting acts, Ntsika, Umle and various performers from Walmer Township.

Kristo Zondagh, the drummer for the band and Sisanda Myataza (also known as Sid), the lead vocalist have always wanted to do something for the community and found that the one passion they had in common was education. Besides drumming and singing, Sisanda is a Media student while Kristo studies architecture. “The two of us have had opportunities that many young people in South Africa only dream about it, I know what it is to dream big and not be able to see beyond your circumstances and I like what Masifunde is doing, giving learners the tools and the confidence they need to take on the world”, said Sisanda after a drumming workshop with the Masifunde drama group. “I’m excited about passing on the knowledge that I have accumulated over the years to these kids and I can’t wait to get started with the work-shops” , Kristo added.

The charity event is set to draw in a huge crowd with well wishers and music lovers mixing in one venue for a good cause. The event will take place on 28 July at 7pm at Coco de Mer in Humewood. An entrance fee of R40 will be charged at the door with attendees being en-couraged to donate what they can.
