A special candle-lighting ceremony is held during the annual CANSA Relay For Life of Port Elizabeth in order to remember those lost to cancer and honour those who have survived. Luminaria will be lit at Kemsley Park Sports Grounds on Friday, 18 March at 19h30 to represent these individuals.
Luminaria Remembrance bags are decorated with photos, poems, special messages or drawings in honor of a loved one who has passed on or is currently fighting the disease. These bags are filled with sand and a candle and placed around the Kemsley Park Sports Ground track. At dusk all the candles will be lit signalling the start of the Luminaria Ceremony after which all attendees are invited to participate in the Circle Of Hope Walk.
“It is beautiful when all the bags with candles are illuminated around the track”, said Helen Vleeschouwer, volunteer luminaria coordinator. “The Luminaria Ceremony is such a moving way to remember loved ones lost to cancer and to salute cancer survivors.”
Anyone desiring to make a luminaria donation may do so by contacting Helen Vleeschouwer at 072 834 1369. Each luminaria remembrance bag (including candle and sand) is R10.
Relay For Life is a fun-filled, overnight event. Teams of 10 to 15 people gather with tents and sleeping bags to participate in the largest worldwide cancer event to celebrate the lives of those who have had cancer, remember those lost, and fight back against a disease that takes too much. Relay For Life brings communities together and this year more than 5 000 communities in 20 countries will participate in Relay events.
Nelson Mandela Bay cancer survivors (anyone who has ever been diagnosed with cancer) will kick off the Relay For Life on Friday, 18 March at 18h00 with the official Survivors Lap – then the rest of participants will join the fun.
