The number of words and sentiments expressed by South African citizens around the statues being toppled, painted, derided, kicked and sworn at has been immense in comparison to the present failure to provide a constitutionally guaranteed need by a parastatal – Eskom.
The present load shedding crisis has the potential to bind South Africans together in a manner last seen for a few years post the 1994 elections and, more recently, during the 2010 World Cup.
Our focus on Government performance is being taken away by the statue issue and the recent flare up of xenophobic (afro-phobic) violence.
Where is that spark that will unite all of us to force our Government’s focus back onto a service delivery issue of the most basic proportions?
Without a reliable supply of power or water we as a country are failing our citizens in the most fundamental of ways and the question needs to be asked; “If we cannot solve the basics then how are we expected to solve the more complex issues such as identity, culture and xenophobia?”
