February has been declared Race Free Month and every day in February we at MyPE will be combating the subtle racist nuances that hamper our thinking, cloud our judgement, restrict our development and increase the tension in South Africa.
South Africans are great dancers and marchers. Not marchers in the traditional sense of “Left, Right, Left Right, arms straight, lock those elbows, push those thumbs down, shoulders straight, army type marching” but more in the sense of a kind of shuffle, half step, dance manoeuvre accompanied by whistling, chanting and blowing of horned instruments whilst following one HUGE banner in the front carried by earnest do gooder liberals who are supported by smaller, wittier cardboard or (in the case of some of the more desperate political parties!) mass produced A4 photocopied signs for the following masses.
The current holy grail is to supply all the marchers with T-Shirts in the colours of the dominant political party organising the march against ….. racism, disunity, corruption, statues, fees, outsourcing, Jacob Zuma, the Guptas, the Zuptas, white monopoly capital, unemployment, animal cruelty, you name it.
QUESTION: When last did you attend a march in celebration of South Africa or some unique event?
ANSWER: Probably never.
NEXT QUESTION: Would you even bother to attend a march FOR some excellent achievement?
ANSWER: Probably not.
I put it to you – this is probably why we will stay mired in mediocrity, continue to rally against racism and allow the Zupta’s to Zoom overhead.
We need to break that cycle and CELEBRATE our achievements with marches and demonstrations of JOY.
Do yourself a favour and search for “march against racism” on Google – today there are 71 400 results containing that term.
Do the same for the search term “march celebrating excellence” on Google – SHOCKINGLY there are only 7 results containing that term
#JustSaying.
