Dear Alan,
I am writing to you about the ‘parking problem’ outside the Langenhoven Drive Oncology Centre, which is situated on the corner of CJ Langenhoven Drive and Mangold Street, Newton Park.
While there is a large parking area available behind the hospital, people see fit to park in Mangold Street in front of the hospital. They do so, without any regard for other road users. To exacerbate the problem, they park directly opposite the entrance to the office complex across the road. It is also very close to the intersection with CJ Langenhoven Drive. This means that drivers have to carefully negotiate their way past these vehicles, with the danger of vehicles turning in from Langenhoven Drive not slowing down or stopping in time to avoid a collision.
In the photo below, there is only one vehicle parked in the street. (Please note, it is illegally facing the wrong way down the road.) However, there have been times where 3 or 4 vehicles have been parked there, creating a bottle neck between the intersection and office block entrance.

If the drivers say that they are dropping off patients, then why not use the paved area provided as seen in the photograph?
While the hospital cannot control what motorists do, they should be more proactive in minimising the potential danger and improve their drop off facilities or do more to advise people to park in the parking area at the back. The municipality should do a survey of the area, but I strongly believe that yellow lines should be painted along that stretch of road and no stopping signs erected.
Sincerely,
Gareth
