www.MyPE.co.za: From the ADT Security Crime Newsletter we have picked out a couple of interesting crime incidents:
Armed robbery in New Brighton: On Friday, 8 April 2011 three armed men entered a local supermarket in Mtimka Street through the back door, held the shop owner up at gunpoint and robbed him of R3000.00 in cash, cigarettes and a large amount of cell phone airtime.
Attempted burglary in Miramar: A resident in Kirkman Road thanked ADT for their rapid response to an alarm activation on Friday, 8 April 2011. Two suspects activated the property’s alarm when they attempted to lever a window catch open and forced open the burglar bars. The suspects fled the premises and ADT was on the scene within minutes to patrol the area for suspicious activity.
Local Kwazakhele Supermarkets hit by armed robberies: Two armed men entered a local store in Njoli Road on Friday, 8 April 2011 and robbed the owner of R2000.00 in cash and his cell phone. The second incident occurred on Saturday, 9 April 2011 when a local supermarket was robbed in Mugaga Street. Six suspects, two of them armed, entered the shop and robbed the store of R4000.00 in cash and an unconfirmed number of cigarettes.
ADT opens doors for Walmer resident: On Wednesday, 6 April 2011 a Walmer resident was stranded at a garage after locking her keys in the car. She approached an ADT vehicle for assistance and the Armed Response Officer was helpful in her moment of distress. He took charge of the situation by calling for assistance and waited with her until help arrived.
How to give a vehicle thief a hard time:
- Park in a well-lit area.
- Close all windows and lock all doors.
- Activate any theft deterrent device you may have.
- Put ALL packages or valuables out of sight.
- Do not keep licence, registration or title papers in your car. Thieves can use these documents to sell your car if stolen, or to impersonate you when they are challenged by police. Owners who indiscriminately leave keys, registration and other identifiable material in their vehicles may return to their residence only to find that they are the victims of a burglary.
- If you have a garage, use it. Lock both the vehicle and garage.
- If you are able to, install an anti-theft device for e.g. gear-locks, steering-locks or immobiliser.
- Service your car regularly to prevent being stranded in a dangerous neighbourhood.
- Lastly, lose the mentality that it will never happen to you!
