Klapping Unemployment One Job at a Time

The British Council in partnership with Siya Sebenza, Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University and Middlesex University will be hosting the Economic Transformation through Employability Skills Conference on 16 February.

The conference is focused on recognizing the problems that surround employability in Nelson Mandela Bay; what has been done to bring about change; and mostly how South Africa can work on employability skills as a foundation of hard skills, which would in turn bring about economic transformation in South Africa.

Deon Pretorious from Development Partners will be the opening speaker. He will present on: The Nelson Mandela Bay War on Hunger, a poverty alleviation project. The project involves a selection of the poorest communities in Nelson Mandela Bay. It is aimed at turning basic needs into opportunities for income, employment generation and skills development. This project uses food provisions as a platform for communities to become self sufficient and to eventually integrate into the mainstream of society.

The next speakers will be Dr Mick Brookes of Middlesex University and Ena Richards from Siya Sebenza. Dr Brookes will be discussing employability issues and Job Seeker failings in NMB. Siya Sebenza is an NPO that runs the WORK-4aLiving Programme. Through this programme, they teach young unemployed people how to look for employment, secure employment and once they have it secured, how to progress in their career by working to a standard of excellence.

Last on the speaker list is Professor Eddie Webster, a professor in Sociology of Work at the University of Witwatersrand, will be the opening speaker, looking at the Industrial Development Zones as an opportunity for job creation in South Africa.

The conference will take place at the Summerstrand Hotel on February 16. Registration starts at 7:30 and the conference will follow. A seat at the conference costs R150 per person and will give one unemployed person the opportunity to attend the Work- 4Aliving Programme.
