I know that secret Fort spot on the rocks…and I had the same Banzai Boogie Board.!!!!! It was bright orange, a hard plastic thing.Recall taking a huge beachbreak number at Pollock and having the wind driven out of me when it closed out and rammed the board into my guts 🙂
The secret was to hold it well in front coming off the top then tuck it right under one when the face collapsed & hold tightly until safely in front; flippers were essential. I had a pair of blue Cressi which I always bought from Leishers (Spelling?) north of Main Street. The board came from the Surf Shop, in Grace or Rodney Street close to Strand Street if my memory serves.
With practice the board could save you in the worst Summerstrand dump and they could be bad. Seem to recall some Aussie cricketers, back in the day, complaining about being dumped there; probably used to Aussie lifeguards putting up the red flags when the shore break was wild.
