Jacques Potgieter – The One that Got Away

3 June 2012 By Alan Straton

Some people say that it was a surprise inclusion but Jacques Potgieter will forever be known as the One that Got Away whilst the Southern Kings knocked on the door of Super Rugby.

The former Verkenner Junior School, Daniel Pienaar High School, Eastern Province Craven Week, Sharks, Mighty Elephants, Eastern Province Kings and present Vodacom Bulls player, on Saturday, received his début call up for inclusion into the Springbok squad.

Jacques Potgieter decided not to wait for the ascendancy of the EP Kings into Super Rugby in 2013 and moved to Pretoria at the conclusion of the 2011 Currie Cup season in order to compete in the 2012 Super Rugby season for the Bulls.

The Kings loss is the Blue Bulls and country’s gain.

Jacques has now demonstrated tangibly how Eastern Province continues to lose players of a high calibre – maybe now the locals will support the Kings 100%?

At the time of Potgieter’s leaving Kings Head Coach, Alan Solomons said that he and the EP Rugby Union wish Jacques well for the future and wish to thank him for his efforts these past seasons.

Passionate about Port Elizabeth and definitely NOT packing for Perth. Alan's ethos is epitomised in the words of Nelson Mandela; "I have fought against white domination and I have fought against black domination. I have cherished the idea of a democratic and free society. If need be, it is an ideal for which I am prepared to die." See more articles by Alan.

The one that got away becomes the 834th Springbok and gets to play in front of his home crowd for his debut match in the Green and Gold – well done Jacques Potgieter. See: http://mype.co.za/new/2012/06/port-elizabeth-player-jacques-potgieter-to-play-debut-game-for-springboks/ for the starting line up of the Springboks against England this Saturday 23 June in port Elizabeth.
