It has taken me a while to decide that Bryce Lawrence also had a hand in the EP Kings Loss

Every morning and often through the day I get glimpses of the EP Kings background images on my monitor and it feels good. The confident strut in the step of a supporter of a winning team is one of the better feelings in the world. Now, in a double whammy the Springboks lost the title of Rugby World Champions and the EP Kings lost the title of 1st Division Absa Currie Cup Champions to Boland on Friday.

From now on we shall refer to the loss as the Peter De Villiers / Bryce Lawrence voodoo.

After conceding an early try to Kings winger Andile Witbooi, the Cavaliers regrouped to lead by 13-7 at the break and eventually cut loose in the second half to win the final by 43-12 at the Boland Stadium.

Not even a yellow card to Boland’s No 8 Zandré Jordaan after 20 minutes could stifle the home team as they consolidated on their late-season form to take the title.

The Kings lost centre Jaco Bekker to a yellow card late in the first half and when Ligtoring Landman scored early in the second half, Boland went ahead 23-7 with little over half an hour left.

Boland scored a further four tries in the second half as they took complete control of the match, almost replicating their recent victory of 49-15 over the Kings in Wellington.

First left-wing Brendon April went over on the hour mark and then, like they did a few weeks ago, Boland cut loose, with Danwell Demas scoring two tries in the final eight minutes.

Two of the recipients of yellow cards, Jordaan for Boland and Bobby Dyer – replacement hooker for the Kings – got the final two tries by which stage the match had opened up completely.

So let us put this into context before we begin the silly stuff: SARU has confirmed that there will be no promotion relegation matches this year and that the Premier Division will, in all likelihood, consist of 6 teams – down from the present eight. Which can be used as some form of solace for disappointed supporters as the Kings were not then really playing for a spot in the premier division and could then afford to allow their ‘injuries’ to weaken their side against Boland.

Of course if the Springboks vs Australia game at the Rugby World Cup had not resulted in the real Man of the Match, Bryce Lawrence, being cheated out of the award and the Springboks coming home then we wouldn’t have seen Peter De Villiers return to his beloved Boland. The mere presence of the Bryce Lawrence tainted Springbok Coach must have been enough to influence the game to go against the EP Kings.

But, big boys learn lessons from their failures and I would like to remind the EP Kings of two paths to glory:

  • Those bloody bonus points DO count
  • A clean sweep of wins with NO points against is the surest way to show your dominance and worthiness of promotion

We have one last season to show the country that we do have what it takes guys – if ever now was the time ………
