International Culture Fest to Rock the Bay

17 August 2017 By Alan Straton

The Nelson Mandela University Office for International Education is hosting the upcoming International Culture Fest on Saturday, 19 August from 11:00 – 15:00 at the Tramways Building in Baakens Valley, Port Elizabeth.

The Fest forms part of the University’s annual International Diversity Week. The aim of this festival is to involve the Nelson Mandela Bay Community in the University’s cultural activities and showcase the University’s appreciation for diversity both on and off campus. It is also aimed at developing knowledge and awareness of different cultures in order to promote intercultural understanding, tolerance and mutual respect.

This festival provides a platform for Nelson Mandela University students and members of the Nelson Mandela Bay from different cultures, religions and backgrounds to meet under one roof and celebrate the City’s rich cultural diversity.

There are currently approximately 1500 international students from 84 countries at Nelson Mandela University. Twelve of these countries will be represented at the festival who will run food stalls and hand out samples of traditional cuisine – free of charge. In addition, students will be exhibiting information, souvenirs and paraphernalia with some displays of artifacts and illustrations which best represent their country.

Visiting these stalls will guarantee attendees an authentic experience of these cultures. Countries represented at the fest include France, South Africa, the Netherlands, Botswana, Malawi, Tanzania, Uganda, Kenya, Burundi, Rwanda, Nigeria, Germany, Swaziland and Zimbabwe. This is definitely an experience not to be missed. Only until food samples lasts.

Members of the public are encouraged to bring their friends and families to support the local food vendors which represent different cultural cuisines, including: Taco Mia, Foongs, the Burger Guys, Fire Foods, the Bay Leaf Café, Shisa African Restaurant, and the German Club.

Micoffee will be on board for the coffee lovers, as well as Chia’s Health Food for the more health conscious. Those with more of a sweet tooth can expect enjoyable homemade ice cream by Han-Made and some scrumptious pastries and desserts by Banneton Bakery.

In this celebratory event, there will also be a sit-down area where attendees can relax with their friends and families. Here they can enjoy something to eat and drink and treat themselves to the most colorful and divine Mocktails by Honeybox, or just quench their thirst with beverages from Shake and Strain.

Attendees will be entertained by our jam-packed, 4-hour entertainment programme on stage consisting of some well-known bands, such as The Cottonfields and Irie Vibes Marimba Band. There will also be a Fusion Fashion show with CultureCut and Trench, as well as some other talented local artists from the Nelson Mandela Bay (and the University). Performances will cover a wide range of cultures, from traditional African, to Indian right through to a Chinese Lion dance performance.

Entrance fee is R5, with free entrance for Nelson Mandela University students when they show their student ID cards. There will also be a shuttle service available between Summerstrand and the Tramways Building during the event for students. Student ID cards are required to access this service.
