Incompatible Archive Problem Solved – Five Alternative Workarounds

The latest update to WordPress (6.4.3) has a small hump in the road when trying to upload any plugins as, when using your supplied MacOS archive utility to create a .zip file any compressed file uploaded will result in a “Incompatible Archive” error.

The ‘problem’ actually stems from MacOS’s ‘Nanny’ function that automatically extracts any ZIP archive you downoad into an extracted folder and NOT as a .zip file. This necessitates you having to re-archive the folder before uploading to your WordPress site.

There has been a bug error reported to WordPress but what do you do in the meantime?

  1. You can use FTP to upload the extracted folder to your WordPress plugin folder
  2. You can use a Windows machine to complete the procedure
  3. You can add this code in your active theme functions.php: add_filter( ‘unzip_file_use_ziparchive’, ‘__return_false’ );
  4. You can install a free 3rd party archiver utility such as RAR & Zip Extractor: A-Zippr from your MacOS App Store and use that to archive your downloaded folder
  5. Contact ALAN from Reach Trust to host and maintain your WordPress Site.
