I go on and on about how the opposition in waiting needs to act like a ‘government in waiting’ by being efficient and actively responding to queries and concerns.

Here is a short story of just how efficient our Port Elizabeth representatives in Parliament are – up for congratulations for being CONSISTENTLY on the ball is the Democratic Alliance’s Annette Lovemore:

My maternal unit (some call her Mom!) and her friend Mary, toddled off to Home Affairs this morning to apply for their new Smartcard ID’s. You may recall that this same Maternal Unit had a great adventure some while ago and couldn’t stop praising the service on our IPTS buses – when they actually ran on our roads for a short while that is.

South African Pensioners are getting the first chance to take possession of these new Smartcard ID’s for free this year – as she has Scottish blood running through her veins you can just imagine how happy this makes my Mom!

Anyway both the Maternal Unit AND Mary were refused the opportunity of applying for a Smartcard ID. The reason given by officials at Home Affairs was that they didn’t qualify for these cards as they were not BORN in South Africa. My Mom has learned from me so she asked for the Manager who said the same thing. Not taking this lying down she then phoned me – somehow she thinks I can fix anything, bless her little cotton socks!

I sent the Democratic Alliance’s shadow Home Affairs Minister Annette Lovemore this little mail:

Hi Annette

My mother, also Annette, has just got back from Home Affairs to apply for the new Smartcard ID which was refused.

Reason given: She wasn’t born in South Africa.

She has been an SA Citizen since 1961. She carries the new Green Barcoded ID.

Can you shed some light on this?

Her friend Mary was also refused a new card.

Once again Annette Lovemore blew me away with her outstanding service and replied that she would get onto this problem right away. She referred my query to Haniff Hoosen who has now promised to send an official response from the Director General of Civic Affairs to take along when the maternal unit resumes her quest to get a new Smartcard ID.

How utterly insane is that! Come back to Port Elizabeth and Nelson Mandela Bay please Annette – we need someone as utterly focused with a great service ethic as you.
