Yours.org – a Bitcoin-based Social Network has just closed it’s first round of funding after having raised $1.5 Million.
Containing four things that make people like me excited – Funding, Bitcoin, Being Paid for Content and Social Networking – I had to go and have a look at just what all the fuss was about.
Yours.org will use its new capital to fund; “… a team of the best engineers and growth experts in the world.”
I am sad to say that they will have to use that money quickly and wisely as a visit to the site revealed today.

The first glaring mistake of Yours.org is the inclusion of a NSFW section of articles – a big no-no when it comes to Google as they do not want to send searchers to such sites when the searcher could be looking for more safe content. Also – MOST searchers who lock in to Google’s default ‘SafeSearch’ setting will miss most of Yours.org’s content.
In order to gauge the expected earnings to a contributor from the site I chose two articles at random from Yours.org and plugged the article tiles into a Google Search Box to test the Search Engine Optimisation skills of the creators of Yours.org. My reasoning was simple – If they can raise $1.5 Million in funding then they MUST be doing something right – that, combined with the age of the Yours.org domain which was first registered in 2000 and the promise of quality content, should guarantee that the site is a strong contender for first page results every time. First page results on any search engine will last far longer than any decent post on a Social Network and guarantees loads of visitors for a long time. Good rankings on a Search Engine can be equated to the Long Range Rifle vs Shotgun approach in marketing.
The two articles chosen for scrutiny fared as such:
- “Build a crypto market watch web page using 40 lines of code” – is NOT listed in Google’s search results at all
- “Comic Books from the 90s – Death the High Cost of Living from 1993” – appears to be a direct copy of an article from another site and does not appear on the first page of Google’s results.
So much for high quality content and the opportunity for contributors to make money from articles.
What have we learned here with regards to promoting our own sites and products from Port Elizabeth?
- A fool and his money are soon parted
- Don’t advertise strong skills and not have the ability to prove it
- Good marketing needs to be backed up with prove-able results
- Good quality and well written content will always win the day
- Using Javascript and/or denying access to search bots is also not a good thing.
