How Many Solar Installations do You Estimate there are in Nelson Mandela Bay?

Loadshedding has been around for a number of years now and the tipping point in solar installations has seen great demand and many entrants into the renewable energy industry.

We are asking you to please help us (YES, there is a small reward for you) to estimate the number of installations that have been done so far in the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality.

If you are a home owner or installer of solar systems then please do assist us in getting a reasonable accurate estimate of the installed renweable energy in our Metro.

We will be sharing the aggregated data (NOT identifiable individually) with the Municipality and other Media Houses once we feel that we have had enough replies.

We only ask for your e-mail so that we can restrict replies to ONE per e-mail address. Your e-mail address will NOT be associated with the aggregated data. We will report the installer and personal data seperately.

Over on Facebook a comment on this article said; “You tell them. They will tax you!”

My Reply was; “It goes like this”:

  1. If you use someone else’s infrastructure to support your own (Grid Tie is a two way street) then you will have to pay for that – NOT a tax but payment for services rendered.
  2. If the authority that owns the infrastructure that you wish to use for free has no idea of just how much power could be fed back into said infrastructure then the owner/s of grid tied solar are doing everyone a disservice.
  3. Having a CoC and notifying (applying for permission from) the local authority is a requirement by law not only for your protection but also for the protection of every other user and the local authority
  4. Any other viewpoint contrary to the above could be considered Anarchy

At the end of the day if you don’t want to register your system then rather go live in the bush totally off the grid.

In Cape Town you MAY NOT install Solar UNLESS you have permission before commencement – much like you HAVE to have approved plans for any building before commencing construction.

If we carry on like we have been in Nelson Mandela Bay very soon that hurdle will ALSO be put in place in order to protect all consumers of electricity.
