Oh woe are the Longhair and I with children who choose ‘marginal’ sporting activities. This past weekend was the turn of the horse riding Apprentice Longhair riding Gatsby (or as I call the nag – the Glue Factory) for Collegiate at the SANESA Qualifier which took place in the grounds of the PE Riding Club.

Just like other members of the media struggle to get their heads around my love of sailing so do I struggle to get my head around this horse riding lark. But, it places the occasional smile on the Apprentice Longhair’s dial and keeps her out of the malls as well as away from the clutches of sweaty pimply teenage boys and is far cheaper than rehab so I grudgingly go along with it.

One of the Apprentice’s mates has a horse called; “Another Million” – short for “Another Million down the drain” I always say! Anyone want to buy some horse poop?

I do notice though that the horse riding fraternity is very much populated with humans of the female variety – I only spotted two male riders and not too many fathers along in support so I presume THAT gives me huge points with the Longhairs. I believe that my mate, Alan Greeff did make a limited foray to see his offspring – Justine and Nicholas, but the coward didn’t stick around for long enough to have a Fanta Brown. Next time Mr Horse Trainer, you will be required to prove that there are NO cowards in your family!

Of course we are mightily proud of our Apprentice who got two first places, one second and one third.

With Collegiate having recently recognised horse riding as a school sport there has been a significant upsurge in the numbers of girls taking part and the team acquitted themselves well this past weekend.

For me the saving grace was practising taking photographs of lumbering beasts as they jumped over strange looking objects. See my efforts below:
