Honoring South Africa’s grand master of art

“Stamps are often used to commemorate those who have made a significant difference in our history and the way we see the world today,” says Johan van Wyk, senior manager of philatelic services at the South African Post Office. “And for that reason we are honoured to launch the Dr George Pemba stamp series which depicts the works of one of South Africa’s most prolific artists, especially during the years of oppression”. Van Wyk was speaking ahead of the Dr George Pemba stamp issue.

Born in 1912 in Hill’s Kraal, Korsten in the Eastern Cape, Dr George Pemba is often referred to as the Grand Master of South African art and is internationally recognised as one of South Africa’s greatest artists. His artworks have become a significant symbol used to promote tolerance among cultures that are as diverse as his art.

George Pemba’s work reflects the richness and diversity of South African life while also capturing the essence of the country’s people in paintings of rural and township life. Despite years of adversity and poverty, George Pemba’s painting career spanned over six decades and provides a remarkable visual history of what he witnessed throughout South Africa’s transformation.

To celebrate the 100th anniversary of the birth of this great artist, the South African Post Office has issued a set of 10 stamps featuring some of Pemba’s best-know artworks. Thirty thousand miniature stamp sheets have been printed and will be available at Post Offices nationwide as from 2 April 2012.

The stamp series depicts the following artwork:

  • Portrait of Mr Gluck, 1947, Oil
  • Xhosa woman, 1947, Watercolour
  • Portrait, 1948, Oil
  • Ting-Ting, 1945, Watercolour
  • Mr Pemba’s mother, 1993, Watercolour
  • Family life, 1977, Oil
  • Portrait of Xolile Ndongeni, 1987, Oil
