Helenvale Centre of Hope – School Holiday Programme

CHILDREN from three schools in the impoverished Helenvale area will get the opportunity to stay off the streets, away from gang violence, drugs and teenage pregnancy that plagues the area thanks to an initiative by the Helenvale Centre of Hope (HCH).

The programme will cater for about 300 pupils from Helenvale, Hillcrest and Bayview primary schools which are in the heart of the notorious gangland.

We are planning our 3rd holiday programme for children which we hope will have a positive impact on their lives.

With the assistance of, Helenvale Youth Dialogue, SAPS Gelvandale, Helenvale Victim Support Centre, Gelvandale Victim Support Centre, The POP’s Foundation, and many more. The programme which starts at 9am on October 2 and will run for the duration of the holidays.

“We want to teach the children about making positive choices in life and that there is more to life than gangs and crime, ”

“The children will be involved in activities throughout the day, otherwise they will be roaming the streets getting into all sorts of trouble.

“In addition we will have motivational speakers raising awareness about drug addiction, crime and teenage pregnancy, abuse awareness”.

Top students from schools in northern areas , members of school governing bodies, teachers, organizations and parents have volunteered to assist.

“We will also be providing meals which some of the children may not have otherwise while their parents are at work.

The Helenvale Centre of Hope was started by Lewis and 10 friends in August last year.

Although the organisation is still in its infancy it has already educational assistance to 60 pupils at Hillcrest Primary school.

They also made 250 recycled Christmas cards for the Helenvale Community last year, and hosted 2 successful Holiday Programmes this year.
