Have your say on Telkom Park’s future

1 March 2016 By Alan Straton

The public of Nelson Mandela Bay will have the opportunity to have their say on the future of the old Telkom Park stadium at a public meeting on Wednesday evening, 2 March 2016.

The meeting, at the Kelway Hotel at 18:30, forms part of the public participation process to guide the drafting of a precinct plan for the redevelopment of the stadium area into a public asset for the city, Mandela Bay Development Agency (MBDA) planning and development manager Dorelle Sapere said.

The MBDA commissioned the precinct plan in order to provide guidelines on the appropriate uses of the land, and it will be used to an inform a Request for Proposals to prospective developers to be issued by the MBDA.

“The Telkom Park precinct, with its link to Happy Valley, is prime land with the potential to act as a key development node for the beachfront and surrounding area, and a significant asset of value to the citizens of Nelson Mandela Bay. The intention is to see mixed uses including residential, office/retail, tourism and leisure, together with public open spaces,” Sapere said.

Tomorrow’s meeting is the second public meeting hosted by SMEC Consortium to gather input from residents, businesses and other interested parties. Other key roleplayers including city officials, NMB Tourism, the ward councillor and Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University have also been consulted in order to ensure that the plan is informed by environmental, technical and infrastructural considerations affecting the land, the overall spatial development framework for the area, and the needs and concerns of its future users and neighbours.

The meeting takes place at the Kelway Hotel in Humewood, from 18:30 to 20:00. All are welcome. For more information, contact 041 373 1289.
