Guinness World Record’s Largest Macarena Dance Record in jeopardy

City of Champions together with the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality is taking another shot aimed at breaking another world record. By hosting the Divas in Spring Concert on Sunday, the legacy project is aiming at shuttering the current Guinness World Record’s Largest Macarena Dance Record.

The show to be held at Victoria Park, South End on September 4, is aimed at combining August, which is Womens’ Month and September which is Heritage/Spring Month by hosting women artists, both local and national.

Performing on the day will be multi-award-winning and world-acclaimed songstress Lira, jazz guru Judith Sephuma, legendary PJ “Thandeka” Powers, Liesl Graham. They’ll all be backed by the Nelson Mandela Bay Orchestra, coordinated by TwoTone Orchestra. Our own local divas will be led The Jazz Queens and Lilitha with many others.

The concert will take the form of a family outing – with people bringing picnic baskets, camp chairs and children should not be left behind. Gates open at 12pm with the show starting at 2pm and ending 7.30pm.

The MC’s will be the ever bubbly AlgoaFM’s Lee Duru, Briony Sparg, Charlton Tobias, Baydu Adams and Vinny Nogemane. The Mio and Queeny Show will broadcast live from the concert.

“Again, we call upon people of Nelson Mandela Bay to come in their numbers. This is a family outing – none should be left home. Bring your coolers, camp chairs and we want everyone to have fun as some will be sitting on the grass enjoying the music,” says City of Champions President Mazizi Msutu.

Councilor Siyasanga Sijadu, newly appointed Nelson Mandela Bay political head for Sports, Recreation, Arts and Culture said “The aim is to promote unity, diversity and social cohesion as we remember the legacy of uTata Nelson Mandela. We also want to grow and develop arts and culture in the metro.” She added that “The event will also assist in empowering local traders and small businesses will market their wares and will get exposure.”

The current largest Macarena Dance was held in Plymouth, United Kingdom in 2011 and involved 2219 participants. The entire routine lasted 5min 36.3secs. “We want to smash this out, and I know we can do it,” says Msutu. We intend to have at least 2700 participants doing the routine at the same time.” The number 27 is synonymous with the number of years Madiba spent in prison.

There was a special offer for those who grab their tickets early, that is by August 26. They will get them for R180 a ticket. After this date, tickets will be, general R250 and VIP R550. Children enter free. Tickets can be bought at TicketPro.

Partnering with City of Champions in hosting the event are Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality, Nelson Mandela Bay Tourism, Nelson Mandela Bay Development Agency, Event Hire Network, Inspiration Events, Algoa FM and TicketPro.

City of Champions is a Nelson Mandela Bay municipality legacy project aimed at promoting the ideals, aspirations and values of the icon – Nelson Mandela.
