Greenacres moves to Atlantis

The image you see below was sent to me recently by someone who knows his way around a GPS and is well versed in finding lost souls at sea.

Of course the cryptic message was; “Spot the not!”

First off a lesson in longitude and latitude which can be expressed in a number of ways – in the advert it starts out as Degrees, Minutes and Seconds although someone has forgotten that there are 60 seconds in a minute and 60 in a degree.

The advert reads as follows:

  • South 33° 56′ 97″
  • East 35° 24′ 67″

Plugging those co-ordinates into your GPS will take you far off the East Coast of Africa into the watery depths – maybe the ad is for a Greenacres branch in Atlantis!

What the advert should say:

  • Lat: -33° 57′ 0.777″
  • Long: 25° 34′ 42.914″

The image below shows just how far off our hapless navigators are:

The marker on the left is the correct position. The marker on the right is the position as reported on the back of the bus!
