Great White Shark and Diver off Thunderbolt Reef Port Elizabeth

5 June 2012 By Alan Straton

It all started off quite innocently when Gletwyn Rubidge posted a tweet saying; “Eugene van Wyngaardt has a fun swim with a great white while spearfishing at Thunderbolt reef, Port Elizabeth.”

Who could resist? So off I toddled to see the video you see below.

Watch as the shark turns towards Eugene and he does his best ‘Underwater Barbara Woodehouse’ telling the shark to go away making swimming movements. All goes swimmingly until the shark disappears from view, Eugene looks up and his boat is a good swim away. Out of sight is certainly not out of mind so it becomes a race to the safety of the boat …………

Passionate about Port Elizabeth and definitely NOT packing for Perth. Alan's ethos is epitomised in the words of Nelson Mandela; "I have fought against white domination and I have fought against black domination. I have cherished the idea of a democratic and free society. If need be, it is an ideal for which I am prepared to die." See more articles by Alan.
