As a web designer I often get contacted by people saying that they don’t think that their website is performing well online. Most often they say that they are not getting enquiries, sales or bookings.
The term for this type of interaction between users and websites is called “conversion”. Conversion is when a user converts from being just a visitor or reader to someone who makes contact either by making a booking, requesting rates, buying a product and even something as simple as making a comment on a blog post.
Let’s create a scenario: You are a website owner running a Port Elizabeth based guest-house. Your website has been up for more than a year but yet you have not gotten a single enquiry… WHY? So off you go to do some research and you find that SEO is what you need to increase your ranking and get more people to find you. After you acquire this information you start looking for a SEO company and request a quote. OK, let’s stop there quick and ask yourself this question first; “Do I need SEO to be performed?”
Before you jump on the SEO bandwagon look a bit closer to home and ask these questions first:
- Is my website well designed?
- Is it easy to navigate and read?
- Is my website search engine friendly to begin with?
If the answer to any of the above is no, then rectify that first before tackling a SEO campaign.
When a user visits your website they are looking for something and if they can’t find it quick enough they go back to the search engine or go to another website. You need to be able to tell visitors to your site what your website is about at a glance. If they struggle to find relevant information or a contact link, they will not convert, they leave. There is no point in spending money on SEO if your source (your website) is not user or search engine friendly.
