Going Green? Explore These Energy-Efficient and Sustainable Products

7 February 2024 By Alan Straton

These tips come from BA Systems – a building automation and management installer whose mantra is simple; “If you can measure it, you can manage it!” BA Systems have extensive experience in specifying and installing Building Management equipment that allows the owner to monitor, measure and manage their consumption of scarce and increasingly expensive resources such as electricity and water.

There are many energy-efficient and sustainable products on the market. The list below is not exhaustive but highlights many areas in your home that you can install and use energy efficient sustainable products:

Home and Garden

Energy Star certified appliances: These appliances use less energy than traditional models, which can save you money on your utility bills. Look for the Energy Star label when purchasing new appliances such as refrigerators, washing machines, dishwashers, and air conditioners.

Smart thermostats: These thermostats can learn your heating and cooling preferences and adjust the temperature accordingly, which can save you up to 10% on your energy bills.

LED light bulbs: LED bulbs use up to 90% less energy than traditional incandescent bulbs and last 25 times longer. They also emit less heat, which can help keep your home cooler in the summer.

Low-flow showerheads and faucets: These fixtures use less water than traditional models, which can help you conserve water and save money on your water bill.

Compost bins: Composting food scraps and yard waste can help create a nutrient-rich soil amendment for your garden.

Rain barrels: Rain barrels collect rainwater that can be used to water your plants, wash your car, or even flush your toilets.

Solar panels: Solar panels convert sunlight into electricity, which can help you power your home and reduce your reliance on the grid.

Energy-efficient windows: Energy-efficient windows have a special coating that helps keep your home cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter, which can save you money on your energy bills.

Sustainable furniture: Sustainable furniture is made from recycled materials or fast-growing woods, which helps to reduce deforestation.

Transportation

Fuel-efficient cars: Fuel-efficient cars use less gas, which can save you money at the pump and reduce your carbon footprint. Look for cars with high EPA ratings.

Electric cars: Electric cars produce zero emissions, which is better for the environment. They are also becoming more affordable and have a longer range.

Bicycles: Bicycles are a great way to get around town and get some exercise. They are also zero-emission and require no gas.

Public transportation: Taking public transportation is a great way to reduce your carbon footprint and save money on gas.

Personal Care

Reusable shopping bags: Reusable shopping bags help to reduce plastic waste.

Bamboo toothbrushes: Bamboo toothbrushes are a more sustainable alternative to plastic toothbrushes.

Safety razors: Safety razors are more durable and sustainable than disposable razors.

Menstrual cups: Menstrual cups are a more sustainable alternative to tampons and pads.

Natural cleaning products: Natural cleaning products are made from plant-based ingredients and are less harmful to the environment than traditional cleaning products.

Food and Drink

Locally-sourced food: Buying locally-sourced food helps to reduce the environmental impact of transportation.

Organic food: Organic food is grown without the use of synthetic pesticides and fertilizers, which is better for the environment and your health.

Reusable water bottles: Reusable water bottles help to reduce plastic waste.

Compostable coffee pods: Compostable coffee pods are a more sustainable alternative to traditional coffee pods.

These are just a few examples of energy-efficient and sustainable products. By making small changes to your lifestyle, you can help to reduce your environmental impact and save money.
