From Twitter to Bluesky

19 February 2025 By Alan Straton

The adage; “Chaos represents opportunity” probably holds true here. In many users of X’s case, though it is probably more of an ElonFatigue situation than anything else.

Open your timeline or notifications page on X and you are guaranteed to see many posts by Elon Musk – EVEN if you do not follow the account. In the old days this type of manipulation of the medium by an owner of the business would have been put down as unsocial or crass. In some ways I can feel just how it must feel to be a very young girl who is the subject of constant attention (harassment) by a creepy, greasy uncle.

I have always told anyone seeking advice from me to listen to my advice, go and get opposing views and then make up their own mind which path to follow. My mind sings a constant mantra; “Don’t be a sheep!”

Anyway – I was one of the ‘lucky’ ones to get an invite to Bluesky when it was in concept and basically only set up my profile and forgot about it.

Bluesky, in the meantime, has been gaining traction and acceptance – mainly from those on the periphery of my circle; journalists, public relations folk and truth seekers.

For the record:

Bluesky is a social media platform that emerged from the vision of Jack Dorsey, the former CEO of Twitter (since renamed X).

Bluesky was conceptualized in 2021 as a decentralized social media platform. The idea was to create a space that prioritizes user control and privacy and launched as an invite-only service in February 2023. Registrations to the public at large were opened in February 2024.

Bluesky’s philosophy revolves around decentralization and user empowerment.

Unlike traditional social media platforms, Bluesky allows users to have more control over their data and interactions whilst encouraging users to collaborate on verification and moderation, enabling them to shape their own social media experience.

Their Authenticated Transfer Protocol (AT Protocol) underpins Bluesky, allowing for a more open and interoperable social media environment.

As of early 2025, here’s how Bluesky and X compare in terms of user base:

  • Bluesky: 31.76 million following rapid growth after the decline of X’s user base.
  • X: 650 million which is a significant user base, but facing challenges with user retention.

Bluesky aims to redefine how users interact online by emphasizing decentralization and user control. While it has made impressive strides with over 31 million users, it still has a long way to go to catch up with X’s 650 million users.

These are the Gqeberha Profiles I can find on Bluesky to date:

Passionate about Port Elizabeth and definitely NOT packing for Perth. Alan's ethos is epitomised in the words of Nelson Mandela; "I have fought against white domination and I have fought against black domination. I have cherished the idea of a democratic and free society. If need be, it is an ideal for which I am prepared to die." See more articles by Alan.
