Follow-up on elderly woman beaten to death in Theescombe

From the Atlas Security Crime Newsletter we have picked out a couple of interesting crime incidents:

Last week an innocent Theescombe resident lost her life after being beaten to death. This tragic incident left a bad taste in the mouths of all Metro residents.

The Police reported that no arrests have been made and that they are working around the clock to track down the perpetrator. It appears that her killer was known to the victim, as there was no sign of forced entry.

When employing gardeners and domestic workers, it is vital to treat the employment process seriously. Take note of the following:

  • Before workers arrive, decide what you want them to see and what you want to hide from their sight.
  • Install a temporary alarm in the areas where the building is taking place to ensure your risk is minimised.
  • Plan beforehand the route through your home that you are prepared to have them take and use while there.
  • Make sure that this is the shortest and safest to the place they must work.
  • Pack away any valuables and expensive-looking items such as laptops, video cameras, coin collections and jewellery.
  • Don’t be shy in asking them to use the back entrance; this may limit exposure to your property.
  • Do not employ suspicious people and do not trust anybody. If you smell a rat with your domestic worker or gardener, act appropriately and protect yourself and your family. It is vitally important to keep your whereabouts to yourself, as information can leak through various channels.
  • Many people have been deceived by a potential employee. They have employed a gardener or domestic worker in good faith only to find themselves ‘cleaned out’ a few weeks later, or worse, the victim of a vicious assault.

Computer fished through window in Newton Park

A Fourth Avenue, Newton Park business lost a computer monitor and tower during a burglary sometime during the night on Thursday last week.

The owner and employees arrived at work just after 07h30 on Friday and noticed that the business had been burgled. They immediately reported the robbery to ATLAS and a Response Team and the Police were dispatched to investigate.

They found a broken window and a computer monitor and tower were missing. It appeared that no entry was gained into the premises and that the goods were fished through the window.

The owner opened a case of burglary with the Police for investigation.

Five armed men rob Heath Park business

Five heavily armed criminals robbed a Helicon Road, Heath Park business at 19h26 on Tuesday evening.

The gang of five men arrived in a white Quantum minibus and entered the store. All of them were wearing balaclavas and were armed with semi-automatic rifles. They demanded the staff to hand over all the money in the shop. The staff complied and gave the robbers the cash.

During the robbery, a shootout occurred and the onsite security guard was shot in the stomach. The robbers fled in their getaway vehicle and disappeared out of the area.

After the robbery unfolded, the staff pressed their panic button to alert ATLAS. The Police and an ambulance were dispatched to the scene, where the guard was treated and a few bullet casings were found.

The Police and their forensic teams are investigating a case of armed robbery.

ON TUESDAY 10 MAY 2011:

  • 07:15 A business in Rhodes Street, North End was burgled. The criminals forced open the front glass door and kicked in the burglar bars. Entry was gained and two welding machines were stolen.
  • 11:46 A residence in Mount Road, Mount Croix was burgled. The back door was kicked in but no entry was gained.
  • 12:14 A business owner in Eveready Road, Sidwell reported that four suspects were stealing metal at the back of the business. The Response Officers and Police arrested all four suspects.
  • 12:19 A residence in Rooseveldt Road, Glendinningvale was burgled. The bathroom window was forced open and the burglar bars were kicked in. Entry was gained, but the owner could not report whether anything was stolen.
  • 13:21 An armed robbery took place at a business in Gould Street, Sidwell. Three suspects armed with guns entered the store, stole money and airtime and fled with their loot. No one was injured during the incident.
  • 19:26 An armed robbery took place at a business in Helicon Road, Heath Park. Five suspects, armed with firearms, entered the store and demanded all the money in the shop. They made off with an undisclosed amount of cash and fled in a white Quantum minibus. Shots were fired and a security guard was shot in the stomach. All five suspects wore balaclavas during the robbery.

ON MONDAY 09 MAY 2011:

  • 02:30 A business in Durban Road, Korsten was burgled. The criminals forced open the front door and smashed a window.
  • 02:39 A business in Kwaford Road, Struandale was burgled. The criminals used planks to lift the fence. They then forced open the office door, but no entry was gained.
  • 07:14 A business in Seventh Avenue, Newton Park had an attempted burglary. A window was smashed, but no entry was gained.
  • 07:19 An armed robbery took place at a business in Sutton Road, Sidwell. When the owner entered the yard, a vehicle stopped outside and a suspect held the owner at gunpoint. He stole a bag containing an undisclosed amount of money and the owner’s cell phone. Five criminals were involved and they fled in a silver Nissan Sentra. No shots were fired.
  • 08:26 Thieves stole batteries from vehicles parked at a business in Fifth Avenue, Walmer.
  • 08:44 A business in Kwaford Road, Struandale was burgled. A window was broken and the burglar bars were kicked in. Rolls of cable and copper piping were stolen.
  • 11:09 Thieves stole a solar powered battery from a business in Struanway, Struandale. The criminals also unscrewed a signboard.
  • 12:00 A residence in Old Cape Road, Greenbushes were burgled. The criminals smashed a window near the sliding door. Entry was gained and two speakers and a DVD player were stolen.
  • 14:27 Thieves stole a few items from a vehicle parked at a business in Aylesbury Crescent, Greenshields Park.
  • 13:46 A business in Third Avenue, Newton Park had an attempted burglary. The carport window was broken near the latch, but the burglar bars were still intact. No entry was gained.
  • 16:20 A residence in Bendore Drive, Beverley Grove was burgled. The criminals smashed the lounge window and gained entry. They stole a laptop and fled. According to an eyewitness, three suspects were involved.

ON SUNDAY 08 MAY 2011:

  • 00:08 A vehicle accident took place on the corner of First Avenue and Walmer Boulevard, Walmer. The driver of a grey Opel lost control of his vehicle and it rolled. The driver suffered neck and internal injuries and the passenger was in severe shock. Both were transported to hospital.
  • 12:16 A residence in Geddes Road, Summerstrand had an attempted burglary. The front window was forced open.
  • 18:13 A residence in Buffelsfontein Road, Walmer was burgled. The criminals used a ladder to climb over the fence and entered the yard. They removed the back sliding door and gained entry. A laptop, a flat screen TV and an x-Box were stolen. The laptop was later recovered.

ON SATURDAY 07 MAY 2011:

  • 00:43 The Police arrested a suspect who was under the influence at a business in Rose Street, Central. The suspect tried to assault the owner with a knife. Fortunately no one was injured during the incident.
  • 02:07 A business in Helicon Road, Heath Park was burgled. The Response Offices found a suspect in a container who was scratching around in boxes, looking for food. The Police issued the man with a warning.
  • 03:33 A residence in Glenroy Place, Sherwood was burgled. Four criminals smashed the sliding door. This premises does not have a burglar alarm.
  • 06:19 A business in Heugh Road, Walmer was burgled. The criminals jumped over the electric fence and broke a window pane. Entry was gained and a computer was stolen.
  • 07:37 A business in Louis Botha Avenue, Summerstrand had an attempted burglary. A section of the wooden window frame was chipped out. No entry was gained.
  • 08:35 An armed robbery took place at a business in Pullen Street, Paterson. The owner reported that five armed suspects entered the premises and held him at gunpoint. They robbed him of an undisclosed amount of cash and cigarettes and fled in an Opel sedan. The gang sped off and abandoned their vehicle along the way. They fled on foot into the bushes. The Police impounded the vehicle.
  • 09:36 A business in Reith Street, Sidwell was burgled. The criminals broke through the toilet window and stole a computer tower and monitor.
  • 11:07 An employee was robbed outside a business in Main Road, Walmer. The employee arrived at the business and was approached by a suspect armed with a gun, who took an empty moneybag and the vehicle keys and fled. The Police and an ambulance attended to the incident.
  • 11:58 A premises in Colorado Road, Missionvale had an attempted burglary. The locks on the gate were broken, but no entry was gained.
  • 20:45 A homeowner in Claires Way, Lovemore Heights reported that she saw someone in the yard. The suspect fled without breaking in.
  • 21:16 An attempted house robbery took place at a residence in Johannes Road, Kamma Park. The owner reported seeing three criminals outside the sliding door and he tried to scare them off by kicking the door.
  • 23:19 A business in Fifth Avenue, Newton Park was burgled. A window was forced open and the burglar bars were removed. Entry was gained and a flat screen monitor was stolen.
  • 23:25 A suspect took meat from a shop in Uitenhage Road, Sydenham and left with out paying.

ON FRIDAY 06 MAY 2011:

  • 07:50 A business in Villiers Road, Walmer had an attempted burglary. A window was smashed, but no entry was gained.
  • 08:35 A residence in Pennelsdrift Road, Greenbushes had an attempted burglary. The criminals forced open the outdoor greenhouse, but fled empty-handed.
  • 09:17 The Response Officers arrested three suspects in Draaifontein Road who were in possession of stolen aluminium sheeting. The Police attended to the incident.
  • 09:40 A neighbour witnessed a burglary in Montmedy Road, Lorraine. The criminals opened the back window and removed the burglar bars. The neighbour reported that a silver/grey Audi was used as the getaway vehicle.
  • 11:18 An armed robbery took place at a business in Singaphi Street, New Brighton. Six suspects, armed with knives, entered the store and stole a cash box, food and airtime.
  • 11:49 Thieves stole a mountain bike, a helmet and a set of house keys from a garage at a residence in Smallman Street, Walmer.
  • 14:30 The Response Officers attended to a domestic violence incident at a residence in Summerwood Crescent, Summerstrand. The homeowner’s husband was threatening to kill his wife and himself. The man has cancer and heart problems. He became aggressive and had a seizure. The Police attended to the incident.
  • 22:19 A few men, armed with knives, were fighting outside a business in Mitchell Street, De Mist (Uitenhage). The manager confiscated their knives and the Police attended to the incident.

ON THURSDAY 05 MAY 2011:

  • 02:02 A medical emergency took place at a residence in Fordyce Road, Walmer. The owner’s father was struggling to breathe. The Response Officers attended to the incident.
  • 02:35 A residence in Ben Viljoen Road, Summerstrand was burgled. The criminals smashed a window and gained entry. A cell phone was stolen.
  • 02:56 A stable in Old Seaview Road, Chelsea was on fire. The Response Officers extinguished the blaze.
  • 03:54 A business in Kempston Road, Sidwell was burgled. The criminals made a hole in the window and forced open the burglar bars.
  • 05:10 The Response Officers were stopped by a member of the public in Somerset Street, Central who reported that her son had assaulted her. The Police were contacted to attend to the incident.
  • 04:48 A residence in Harvey Street, Summerstrand was burgled. The criminals forced open a window and gained entry. A computer was stolen.
  • 07:16 Thieves stole copper piping from a residence in Juan Pierre Street, Rowallan Park.
  • 07:32 A business in Fourth Avenue, Newton Park was burgled. The criminals smashed a window, but no entry was gained. A computer tower and a monitor were pulled through the window.
  • 07:44 An armed robbery took place at a business in Slater Street, North End. The owner reported that three criminals, armed with firearms, robbed them of an undisclosed amount of cash and cell phones. He mentioned that these suspects were at the shop on Tuesday posing as customers and ordered something. They returned to collect the order and as the owner went to the back to fetch it, one of the suspects held him at gunpoint. The other two criminals ordered the customers to lie flat on the floor. The receptionist’s wallet was also stolen during the robbery, but no one was injured during the incident.
  • 10:24 Thieves stole copper piping from a residence in Gladstone Street, South End.
  • 11:52 A house robbery took place at a residence in Calais Place, Lorraine. The suspects entered via the kitchen window and stole jewellery, two cell phones and a laptop.
  • 19:43 A business in Westview Drive, Mill Park was burgled. The suspects forced open the inter-leading door and opened the unlocked security gate. Entry was gained and a digital camera and a cell phone were stolen.
  • 22:15 A business in Circular Drive, Charlo had an attempted burglary. The criminals lifted the door, but fled when the alarm activated. No entry was gained.

ON WEDNESDAY 04 MAY 2011:

  • 04:08 A business in Patterson Road, North End was burgled. The Police managed to catch and arrest four suspects with a bakkie full of stolen copper cabling.
  • 07:26 A business in McIlwraith Street, Summerstrand had an attempted burglary. The suspects tried to break the aluminium frame. No entry was gained.
  • 13:35 A residence in Fordyce Road, Walmer was burgled. The small lounge window was forced open and entry was gained. A flat screen monitor, an iPOD docking station and a digital camera were stolen.
  • 15:25 A woman stabbed a business owner in Parliament Street, Central. The Response Officers caught the suspect and the Police arrested her.
  • 16:58 A business in Van Dyk Street, Westering was burgled. The criminals broke three windows and gained entry. They also broke the flatlet window and kicked in the burglar bars. An engagement ring, a GPS system, a camera, clothing and shoes were stolen.
  • 19:17 A business in Tulbagh Street, Kabega Park was burgled. The suspects entered through the kitchen window. They tried to steal a microwave oven and a kettle, but dropped them while making their way out of the building.
  • 23:16 The Police and Atlas arrested a drug dealer in Western Road, Central. He tried to flee in a black Golf and shots were fired, but no one was injured during the incident. The suspect was arrested and the vehicle was impounded.
