Five FNB Varsity Cup players who impressed (Round 4)

10 March 2022 By Alan Straton

VarsityCup.co.za selects the standout players from the five matches played on Monday.

CHRIS HUMPHRIES (FNB WITS)

FNB Wits scored 53 points and five tries to hand title favourites FNB UFS Shimlas their first defeat of the season. While there were many standouts for the plucky side from Johannesburg, flyhalf Chris Humphries delivered a commanding all-round showing, and contributed 26 points via an accurate goal-kicking performance.

ANDRÉ FOUCHÉ (FNB NWU EAGLES)

The powerful No 8 has been one of the tournament’s star performers over the first four rounds of the competition. Fouché was one of the few Eagles players who dominated the collisions and influenced the breakdowns in the 17-8 win over FNB UP-Tuks. While credit should go to the Eagles scrum for setting the platform, his finish from the base of the set piece in the 31st minute ensured that the hosts took control of the contest.

KYLE CYSTER (FNB MADIBAZ)

The FNB Madibaz started their must-win clash against the FNB CUT Ixias with a bang, scoring 33 points in the first half. Fullback Kyle Cyster punished some poor defence during this period, and touched down for three tries in 26 minutes.

SEAN SWART (FNB MATIES)

Swart has been a consistent performer for FNB Maties this season. Backed to start at hooker against FNB UJ, he turned in another big performance at the set pieces and mauls, and added another two tries to his impressive tally.

DURAN KOEVORT (FNB UCT IKEYS)

The FNB UCT Ikeys claimed a 51-26 win over FNB UWC in the Cape derby. Duran Koevort was the man who began the assault, scoring a try in the first minute of the match. The Ikey Tigers fullback finished the game with 17 points to his name.

More Rugby news HERE. The FNB Varsity Cup and Shield is an annual South African Rugby tournament that involves the top rugby playing universities in SA. The FNB Varsity Cup was launched in 2008 with the tournament taking place over just six weeks, including a bumper weekend of matches in George. Koshuis Rugby also started in 2008. In the same year the White Card rule was adopted.
