First 6 Of 20 New Speed Cameras Deployed in R50 Million Project

5 December 2024 By Alan Straton

Editor: At R2.5 Million each these speed cameras better be able to run after, catch, detain and collect money on the spot from every offender!

I am having a real problem justifying the R2.5 Million per camera for the project so went onto online mega market AilBaba.com to see if I could find a fixed traffic speed camera for sale.

The highest value ones were these:

  • Brand New Signalways Fixed speed measurement enforcement system Traffic speed detector cctv camera Speed enforcement camera: $4 999 (R90 256) each
  • Customized design fixed stationary traffic violation enforcement radar speed camera: $5 500 (R99 301) each for 10 or more
  • Signalway 8MP vehicle speed detection Traffic flow collection traffic speed cameras Speed enforcement portable camera system: $5 200 (R93 885) each for 20

In other words 20 of the most expensive speed cameras on offer would cost R1 877 700 EXCLUDING shipping, VAT and import fees. Shipping is quoted at $528.93 (R9 549.78) per two or R85 497.80 which is STILL less than the R2.5 Million per camera for the NMB Project.

I appreciate that the R50 Million is PROBABLY not on the speed cameras only and includes an amount for maintenance, insurance, re-calibration etc. so directed a question via WhatsApp to the NMB communications department asking them to please explain; “How is the R50 Million made up? Only on cameras as a CAPEX, to a service provider for a fixed period, OR…?”

At he time of publishing my question had yet to be read, let alone responded to.

The NMB Press Release:

The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality is proud to announce the installation of new speed cameras across the metro, a project valued at R50 million. As of 4 December 2024, six cameras are operational, with a total of 20 cameras planned to cover the entire metro upon project completion.

These cameras are strategically placed in traditional high accident zones to maximise their impact on road safety.

The installation of these speed cameras brings numerous benefits to the community, including:

  • Enhanced Road Safety: By ensuring compliance with speed limits, the cameras help reduce accidents and fatalities, promoting more responsible driving behaviours.
  • Efficient Law Enforcement: Speed cameras enable effective enforcement of speed regulations, allowing police resources to be allocated to other critical safety priorities.
  • Data Collection: The cameras collect valuable data on traffic patterns, aiding in better traffic management and infrastructure planning.
  • Cost Reduction: By decreasing accidents, the cameras help lower costs associated with emergency responses, medical care, and vehicle repairs.

“Together, these benefits contribute to a safer and more efficient transportation system for all residents. Speed cameras are an essential tool in our ongoing efforts to create a safer community. They support law enforcement and provide critical data that can help improve our roadways. Ultimately, we can expect a reduction in the costs associated with road accidents and a significant improvement in the quality of life for everyone in Nelson Mandela Bay,” said MMC, Safety and Security, Cllr Luyanda Lawu.

The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality remains committed to enhancing the safety and well-being of its residents through innovative and effective solution. “We urge all residents, pedestrians, motorists, and all road users to respect the law, don’t drink and drive, to be vigilant against criminal elements on the roads and to drive safely” urged MMC Lawu.
