So read one of the many placards carried by protesting residents from 47 of the Nelson Mandela Bay Metropolitan wards, as we exited from the 1st meeting of the 3rd democratic council of the Bay today.
Other placards read:
- From Ward 55 – We Don’t Need Phumeza
- Ward 14 – We are not happy
- Phantsi nge Ward 60 Office
- People Shall Govern
- ANC is our future
- Phumeza is not our Councillor. She is the Clr. for Top 5 REC members. Don’t confused us at Ward 55.
- Mafana you need to join other corrupt party not ANC. Hamba Mafana, enough is enough.
- Ward 23 Asikhufuni Mthimkulu
- No Phumeza inside the office until Zuma respond.
- Ward 60 – Zuma we are waiting
- We did not vote for you Nondhiko, we voted for ANC. So please step out.
- Ward 54 – Madlavu, take your friend (Aron) to your construction business forever. We do not need him.
- Ward 23 – We are not happy.
- Ward 60 – Mafana is violating our rights.
According to a representative of the Metro Concerned Group, Zolani Dondashe, a number of the newly elected Councillors were not elected in terms of an ANC National Executive Committee procedure which was ‘ignored’ by members of the local Regional Executive of the ANC who placed their favoured candidates on the list in defiance of the will of residents.
The Metro Concerned Group is calling for removal of the top five ANC Regional Executive Committee office holders; REC chairperson – Nceba Faku, regional secretary – Zandisile Qupe, chief whip – Chippa Ngcolomba, councillor – Fikile Desi and ward councillor – Thembinkosi Mafana.
The Mayor did not engage with any of the protesters.
In April of 2011, Jacob Zuma said that where the list process had been manipulated those councillors would be removed after the 18 May elections and replaced by others acceptable to communities.
Before the elections Mayor Wayile reassured the members that the lists would be ‘checked’ after the elections and the will of the people would prevail.
It now looks like the local Metro Concerned Group want to engage with Zuma and challenge re-elected Mayor Wayile to both make good on their pronouncements. Or they will have to wait until the ANC’s National Conference in 2012 to vote and replace the present REC.
