Extreme Caution advised for coastal areas

16 June 2014 By Alan Straton

The NSRI are urging extreme caution to the public around the coast as cold fronts are bringing high swells and dangerous sea conditions around the coastline.

A man was swept off rocks in Hermanus and despite an extensive search he is missing after being swept off the rocks by a wave during the Full Moon Spring high tide.

In Knysna the NSRI sea rescue base has been flooded causing damage but the sea rescue station remains operational and on high alert.

According to the South African Weather Service: High seas with wave heights from 6 to 9m are expected between Cape Agulhas and East London at times.

Big sea swells brought in by a series of cold fronts together with the Full Moon Spring Tide has resulted in dangerous sea conditions around our coast and extreme caution is advised particularly to anglers fishing from shore, boaters, paddlers, bathers and we urge the public not to venture along harbour walls where waves could sweep over harbour walls.
