Engaging people victimised by illegal deductions to SASSA grants

26 March 2016 By Alan Straton

Next week Tuesday and Wednesday, the DA Shadow Minister of Social Development, Bridget Masango MP, DA Leader in the National Council of Provinces (NCOP), Elza Van Lingen MP and others will be visiting the Eastern Cape to hear citizens’ stories about the impact of unlawful deductions from their SASSA grants.

Thousands of poor and unemployed South Africans receiving grants from government continue to suffer and bear the brunt of scams involving unlawful deductions from their monthly grants. The problem is ongoing and government has taken no decisive action to investigate this and call those responsible for defrauding the poor to book.

Despite the fact that these deductions have been reported since 2010, it is now six years later and those in the most need are being forced to continue eking out an existence from what is left in their accounts. This includes child-headed households, the disabled, the aged and the unemployed, who have to gasp for survival as food prices continue to rise amidst an ongoing drought, water shortages as well as rising unemployment in a failing economy.

The DA says that they will not sit by while the most vulnerable in our society are abused by the corrupt and greedy few, as well the government officials who choose to turn a blind eye to this atrocity.

DA Members of Parliament involved with Social Development are determined to help those affected and get to the bottom of this practice, once and for all.

Those with grievances can go to the following places:

  • Tuesday, 29 March 2016 09:30 Humansdorp Kruisfontein Civic Centre (Arcadia)
  • Tuesday, 29 March 2016 11:30 Humansdorp Kwanomzamo Community Hall (Kwanomzamo)
  • Tuesday, 29 March 2016 14:00 Jeffreys Bay Pellsrus Community Hall (Pellsrus)
  • Wednesday, 30 March 2016 10:00 Nelson Mandela Day Metro Chatty Community Hall (Northern Areas)
  • Wednesday, 30 March 2016 14:00 Nelson Mandela Day Metro NU2 Motherwell Community Hall (Motherwell)
