Employees donate clothes to local charity organisations

Employees of Volkswagen Group South Africa in Uitenhage recently donated over 2 000 items of clothing to two charity organisations in the Nelson Mandela Bay Metropolitan area in support of the Winter Woollies Collection initiative.

The items which included blankets, jerseys and shoes, were donated to People Opposing Poverty in Society Foundation (POPS) and Self-Help and Resource Exchange (SHARE).

POPS Foundation started five years ago with the aim of supporting poverty stricken families in Nelson Mandela Bay Metropolitan area. The foundation is currently assisting four daycare centres in Motherwell, Timothy Valley, Veeplaas and Gelvandale with daily meals, educational material, toys, clothes, blankets and mattresses.

Mureedah Botha, co-founder of POPS said: “We will be distributing the donated clothing items from Volkswagen employees to the daycare centres and families that we support. The recipients of these items especially the children will be very grateful of the generosity of the Volkswagen employees.”

SHARE is a community based non-profit charity organisation that was established in KwaNobuhle, Uitenhage in 1988. It supports orphans, vulnerable women and children and disabled youths. The organisation which is run by a team of social workers and child care workers, is governed by community members.

Nominise Gogo, Director of SHARE thanked Volkswagen employees for their benevolence and support: “Your kind donation will put a smile on the faces of the children at our foster care centre and will give hope to the disabled youths.”

Nonkqubela Maliza, Director of Corporate and Government Affairs at Volkswagen Group South Africa, said the donation to the two charities forms part of Volkswagen’s employee volunteerism initiative which encourage staff to support and participate in campaigns that are aimed at uplifting less fortunate communities in the Nelson Mandela Bay Metropolitan area.
